# Cemu not launching or black screen on game start — complete fix guide

Cemu opens (or refuses to open at all), you double-click a Wii U game, and the result is either a black screen, an instant crash, or nothing — Cemu just sits silent. These are among the most reported Cemu first-run issues and almost all of them trace back to three root causes: a missing C++ runtime, a wrong graphics API for your GPU, or shader pre-compilation not yet finished.

Symptoms that land here:

Cemu won't open at all — a loading spinner appears and then nothing, or Windows says "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)" or a missing DLL error
Cemu opens, you launch a game, and you get a black screen that never goes away (audio may or may not play)
Cemu launches but crashes immediately or after a few seconds with no error message
The game loads but is extremely slow for the first 10–30 minutes before becoming playable (shader cache compilation stutter)

What makes Cemu different from most emulators: Cemu requires a 64-bit Visual C++ runtime (included with most modern Windows installs but missing on fresh/minimal setups), and it uses either Vulkan or OpenGL for rendering — the wrong choice for your GPU or driver causes instant black screens. Additionally, Cemu compiles shaders in real time on first play, producing severe stutter until the cache is warm; this is not a hardware problem.

Re-test after each step below before continuing.
