# Dolphin: GameCube controller / adapter not detected — how to fix it

Dolphin cannot use a GameCube controller through a USB adapter until you configure the GCN adapter backend correctly — Windows treats it as a generic HID gamepad by default, which is incompatible with Dolphin's low-latency adapter driver.

You plugged in an official Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter (originally for Wii U or Nintendo Switch) or a third-party adapter such as a Mayflash 4-port, and ran into one of these:

Dolphin's controller settings show no GC adapter option in the device dropdown
The adapter appears as a generic HID gamepad but inputs are wrong, missing, or unresponsive
Dolphin shows "GameCube Adapter for Wii U" in the list but all buttons read as unpressed
The adapter works in other apps or on the Switch but not in Dolphin
Rumble does not work even though the adapter lights are on

Why this happens: Windows assigns a generic HID driver to the adapter on first plug-in. Dolphin's dedicated GCN adapter backend requires direct USB access (via libusb or a Zadig-installed WinUSB driver) — it deliberately bypasses the HID layer for lower input latency. Until you switch the adapter's driver to WinUSB, Dolphin cannot claim the device properly.

There is a second path — using the adapter as a standard XInput/HID gamepad in Dolphin — but this disables native rumble, loses the adapter's latency advantage, and does not work on the official Nintendo adapter at all. The fix below is the correct path. Re-test after each step.
