# Dolphin missing characters or graphical glitches? Pick the right graphics backend (Vulkan vs OpenGL vs D3D)

Missing characters, invisible text, or rendering glitches in Dolphin that no in-game setting fixes are almost always the wrong graphics backend for your GPU. Switch the backend in Graphics → General → Backend and re-test the broken scene: try Vulkan first on most GPUs, OpenGL on Nvidia, and Direct3D 11 on AMD or Intel when Vulkan misbehaves.

A GameCube or Wii game boots in Dolphin, but it renders wrong: character models or NPCs are invisible, on-screen text and menu items disappear, fonts turn into blocks, the picture flickers or strobes, or you get garbled geometry and missing effects. Often the exact same game looks perfect for someone else — and switching one setting fixes it instantly.

Cause: Dolphin can render through several different graphics backends — Vulkan, OpenGL, and Direct3D 11/12 (plus a software renderer for debugging). A backend is the bridge between Dolphin and your GPU driver. Each one has slightly different strengths and bugs, and how well it behaves depends on your GPU vendor (Nvidia / AMD / Intel) and your driver version. When a specific game shows missing characters, invisible text, or glitches that no in-game setting fixes, the backend is usually mismatched to your hardware — not the game files and not the emulator itself.

This is one of the fastest fixes in all of emulation: the backend is a dropdown, the change takes seconds, and the right choice for your GPU clears the large majority of these "X is invisible / glitchy" reports. Below is a decision guide — which backend to try first for your GPU, how to switch it safely, and what to check when the backend alone doesn't do it.
