# EmuDeck not installing or set up correctly on Steam Deck — common first-run fixes

EmuDeck is the most popular automated emulation setup tool for Steam Deck and Linux PCs — but several common first-run problems can leave it refusing to launch, hanging mid-install, or completing silently while emulators remain misconfigured.

Common symptoms that bring users here:

"EmuDeck AppImage won't open" or "permission denied" — Linux does not make downloaded files executable by default. The AppImage needs one extra step before it will launch.
"Installation gets stuck or freezes at a specific emulator" — EmuDeck installs emulators as Flatpaks from Flathub. Network interruptions or a corrupted Flatpak install can block the process.
"Games don't show up in ES-DE / Pegasus after setup" — EmuDeck expects your ROMs in a specific folder structure. Files placed in the wrong location are silently ignored.
"Emulators are missing from Steam Game Mode" — EmuDeck does not automatically add emulators or frontends to Steam; that is a separate step inside the EmuDeck app or Steam itself.

Important: EmuDeck is a setup tool for emulators — it does not provide or distribute game files, BIOS files, or firmware. You must supply your own legally-obtained game backups and any required BIOS files. See the related fix for which emulators need BIOS files and where they go.
