# Emulator graphical glitches? Do a clean GPU driver install (AMD & Nvidia, step-by-step)

Graphical glitches that survive an in-emulator settings change — or that appear across several emulators at once, or right after a Windows update — almost always mean a bad or stale GPU driver, not the emulator. The reliable fix is a clean reinstall of your AMD or Nvidia driver (fully removing the old one first), not more setting tweaks. Steps below.

A game that should look fine renders wrong: flickering or strobing, missing or solid-black textures, stretched/garbled polygons, a screen full of artifacts, or UI elements and characters that vanish. It can show up across several emulators at once (Dolphin, PCSX2, RetroArch, DuckStation), or it appears suddenly after a Windows update — a game that ran clean last week is now a mess.

Cause: when glitches survive across emulators or appear right after an update, the most common culprit is the GPU driver, not the emulator. A driver can become corrupt, get partially overwritten, leave stale files behind from a previous version, or simply ship a buggy release. Windows Update also likes to silently install its own older/generic display driver over the one you installed — which is a frequent cause of "it broke and I changed nothing." Because every emulator renders through that same driver, one bad driver breaks many of them at once.

This is fixable and it does not mean your GPU is dying. A clean driver reinstall — fully removing the old driver before installing a fresh one — resolves the large majority of these cases. Below: the clean-install procedure for AMD and Nvidia, how to confirm the emulator is using the right GPU and backend, and how to roll back when a new driver itself is the bug.
