# How to Dump Your Own ROMs and BIOS Files Legally — Console-by-Console Guide

Emulation guides always say "dump your own ROMs from cartridges you own," but they never explain how. I have physical games and consoles and I want to create backup ROM files legally. What tools do I need to dump ROMs from cartridges, and how do I dump BIOS files from my own PS1, PS2, or other console? I want to do this correctly and legally.

Legal context: In most jurisdictions, making a personal backup copy of software you own for non-commercial use is considered fair use or is explicitly permitted. This guide covers dumping from your own legally purchased originals. Distributing or downloading ROM files is a separate matter — this guide covers only creating a backup of media you own.
