# PPSSPP cheat codes not working — CWCheat won't activate

You entered or imported cheat codes in PPSSPP but they have no effect in-game. PPSSPP uses the **CWCheat** system, which requires enabling a global switch first and then activating codes per-game — skipping either step means codes load but silently do nothing. This guide covers both the settings path and the cheat-file import path for Windows, Android, and iOS.

## Solution 1: enable-cheats-ppsspp-system-settings
### solutionTitle
Turn on "Enable Cheats" in System settings — the required global switch
### isMostHelpful: true
### body
1. Open PPSSPP → **Settings → System**.
2. Scroll to **Cheats** and toggle **Enable Cheats** ON.
3. Start (or resume) your game.
4. While in-game, open the PPSSPP menu (Back button on Android / Esc on PC / three-dot menu on iOS) and tap **Cheats**.
5. Each listed cheat has a checkbox — tick the ones you want active.
6. Return to gameplay; codes take effect immediately (most require a save/reload to activate inventory-type cheats).

If the Cheats option doesn't appear in-game, confirm the global switch from step 2 is ON and restart PPSSPP entirely.

## Solution 2: import-cwcheat-db-file
### solutionTitle
Import a CWCheat .db cheat database for your game
### isMostHelpful: false
### body
PPSSPP doesn't ship with a pre-loaded cheat database — you add one manually.

1. Download a CWCheat database (search "PPSSPP CWCheat database .db" — commonly `cheat.db` or `CHEAT.DB`).
2. Place the file in:
   - **Windows/Linux/Mac:** `PPSSPP/memstick/PSP/Cheats/CHEAT.DB`
   - **Android:** `PSP/Cheats/CHEAT.DB` (in your selected PSP folder, not in Android/data)
   - **iOS:** open PPSSPP's built-in file browser → navigate to `PSP/Cheats/` and import.
3. Enable Cheats globally (Solution 1, step 2), then launch your game.
4. Open the in-game Cheats menu — entries from the DB matching your game's **Game ID** appear automatically.
5. Tick the cheats you want enabled.

**Game ID mismatch:** if no cheats appear after importing the DB, open Settings → System → and note the **Game ID** shown (format: `ULUS-XXXXX` or `ULUS10041`). Search your `.db` file (it's plain text) for that exact ID to confirm entries exist.

## Solution 3: add-cheat-code-manually-ppsspp
### solutionTitle
Enter a CWCheat code manually for a specific game
### isMostHelpful: false
### body
You can create your own cheat entry in the `CHEAT.DB` file (or a separate `.ini` file) using the CWCheat format.

CWCheat code structure:
```
_S ULUS-XXXXX          ← Game ID (match exactly)
_G Game Name Here
_C0 Infinite Health    ← _C0 = disabled by default; _C1 = enabled by default
_L 0x2012B3A4 0x05F5E0FF
```

1. Open (or create) `PSP/Cheats/CHEAT.DB` in a plain-text editor.
2. Find your game's section (search for the Game ID) or add a new block at the bottom.
3. Paste the `_C0`/`_L` lines from your code source.
4. Save the file, restart PPSSPP, launch your game, and enable the code from the in-game Cheats menu.

Common code sites: [consolecheats.com](https://consolecheats.com), [gbatemp.net](https://gbatemp.net) PSP cheats section, or Google ` CWCheat code`.

## Solution 4: cwcheat-not-working-specific-game-version
### solutionTitle
Cheat works for others but not your ROM — check region and version mismatch
### isMostHelpful: false
### body
CWCheat codes are memory-address specific — a code for the US version (`ULUS`) won't work on the European (`ULES`) or Japanese (`ULJM`) version, and different game revisions shift memory addresses.

**Diagnosis:**
1. Open PPSSPP → Settings → System — note the full Game ID (e.g., `ULUS10041`).
2. Compare to the `_S` line in your cheat entry — they must match exactly including the digit suffix.
3. If you have `ULES` (EU) and only `ULUS` (US) codes exist, look for region-specific codes on gbatemp.net, or try loading the US version of the game.

**Other causes:**
- Some cheats require being on a specific save point or in a specific game state to take effect (e.g., "max money" only updates when the money variable is accessed).
- Multi-address cheats with `_L 0x4` (block writes) can fail if the game uses DLC or patches that shift data layout — try only the individual `0x2` write lines.
