# PPSSPP running slow or lagging — fix performance with the right graphics backend and settings

PSP games should run at a locked 60fps (or 30fps for games that target 30) on almost any modern PC. If PPSSPP is dropping frames or running below full speed, the culprit is almost always a settings mismatch — not your hardware.

Symptoms of a PPSSPP performance problem:

Games run visibly slower than they should — choppy movement, slow-motion audio, or the fps counter showing below 60 (or below 30 for 30fps-capped titles)
PPSSPP shows high CPU usage in Task Manager but the GPU is idle — the software renderer is active instead of hardware (GPU) rendering
Performance is fine on the title screen but drops heavily during gameplay or cutscenes
A high rendering resolution (4x, 8x) was set to make the image sharper, and frame rate dropped immediately after changing it

Why this happens: PPSSPP's default settings are conservative — designed to work on a wide range of hardware including low-end Android phones. On a modern PC, these defaults may leave performance on the table (using OpenGL instead of Vulkan) or, if you have experimented with settings, the render resolution may have been set higher than your GPU can sustain. The PSP's native resolution is only 480×272; rendering at 4x or 8x multiplies the GPU workload by 16–64× compared to native.
