# GameCube/Wii games crash in RetroArch when the ROM is zipped (Dolphin core)

You loaded the Dolphin core fine, picked your GameCube or Wii game, and RetroArch either crashes back to desktop, freezes on a black screen, or silently kicks you back to the menu. The exact same game runs in standalone Dolphin. The one thing that's different: your game is stored inside a .zip or .7z archive.

Cause: Most RetroArch cores can read a game straight out of a zip because RetroArch decompresses small ROMs into memory before handing them over. The Dolphin core is different. GameCube/Wii images are large (often 1.4 GB to several GB) and Dolphin expects to stream the disc image from disk as it runs — it opens the file directly and seeks around inside it. It cannot read from RetroArch's in-memory zip extraction the way a small cartridge-era core can. So when you point it at a zipped image, the core gets a file it can't stream and falls over.

This is a container-format problem, not a bad dump and not a Sys-folder issue. If the core crashes the instant any game loads regardless of compression, check the Sys folder missing fix instead. If the core won't even appear in the list, that's the missing info file fix. This article is specifically for "runs when unzipped, crashes when zipped."
