# shadPS4 PS4 emulator — game not running, firmware missing, or black screen fix

shadPS4, the open-source PlayStation 4 emulator, starts but your game does not run — it crashes immediately, shows a black screen, hangs on the splash, or reports a missing firmware or module file.

You are likely hitting one of these:

Game crashes on launch or shows "Fatal error: required firmware module not found" — shadPS4 needs a dumped PS4 firmware for certain system modules; without it, commercial titles exit immediately
Black screen after the game's intro logo — the game starts the renderer but GPU-side Vulkan initialisation fails or a missing shader cache causes a draw-call crash
"Vulkan not supported" or emulator exits silently — shadPS4 requires Vulkan 1.3; systems running outdated GPU drivers or older integrated graphics may not expose the required extensions
Game listed as "playable" on the compatibility site but does not boot for you — local build version, firmware version, or GPU driver version differs from the reporter's setup
Controls or controller input not detected inside the game — shadPS4 uses SDL for input; some DualShock 4 / DualSense USB connections require a driver fix before they are recognised

Why this happens: shadPS4 is an early-development emulator. Unlike RPCS3 (PS3) or PCSX2 (PS2), which have years of HLE (high-level emulation) of system calls, shadPS4 currently LLE-emulates many PS4 system libraries. It relies on a legally-dumped copy of the PS4 firmware to supply the real system modules that commercial games depend on. Without the firmware, any game that calls a system library (virtually all commercial titles) will fail at boot. Additionally, shadPS4's renderer is Vulkan-only with no DirectX fallback, so GPU driver currency is mandatory.

Work through each fix in order. Most users are unblocked at step 1 (firmware install) or step 2 (Vulkan driver update).
