# Vita3K: firmware install failed — how to set up PS Vita system software

Vita3K requires the official PlayStation Vita system firmware (a .PUP file from Sony's servers) before any game will run. The emulator ships without this file for legal reasons, so every new install hits this wall.

You tried to launch a PSVita game and ran into one of these:

"Firmware not installed" or "Please install the firmware" on first run
The firmware install dialog appears but the progress bar stalls, errors out, or disappears without finishing
"Invalid firmware" or "Wrong version" after pointing Vita3K at a .PUP file
Games still refuse to launch even after a firmware install that appeared to succeed
The PSP2UPDAT.PUP file downloads but the emulator says it cannot read it

Why this happens: Vita3K calls into real PS Vita OS modules to run games accurately. Without a firmware installation, those modules don't exist on disk and nothing can boot. This is the same reason RPCS3 needs PS3UPDAT.PUP — the emulator needs actual system libraries, not just a ROM.

The legal line: The PS Vita firmware is copyrighted by Sony. The only legal source is Sony's own update servers, using the URL documented in the official Vita3K setup guide. EmuDesk does not host firmware files.

Re-test after completing each step.
