# Xenia Xbox 360 emulator — game not loading, DirectX 12 required, or crash fix

Xenia, the Xbox 360 emulator, fails to load your game — it crashes immediately, reports "game failed to load," says DirectX 12 is required, or exits silently after showing the game thumbnail.

You are likely hitting one of these:

"Failed to load/execute game" or "unable to map file" error — Xenia cannot read or mount the game file; usually a path issue, wrong file format, or a corrupt dump
"DirectX 12 is required" message or emulator exits on startup — Xenia's Vulkan/D3D12 renderer requires a GPU and driver that expose DirectX 12 (Feature Level 12_0 or better); older hardware or drivers may not qualify
Xenia launches but the game shows a black screen immediately — renderer initialisation fails or the game's boot shader is not compiled; often a wrong API setting or missing runtime
Xenia Canary crashes but Xenia stable works (or vice versa) — Xenia maintains two branches with different compatibility profiles; a game that runs on one may not on the other
Game loads title screen but crashes within seconds — GPU driver or shader compiler issue; sometimes resolved by switching graphics API between D3D12 and Vulkan

Why this happens: Xenia does not use DirectX for runtime (it translates Xbox 360 GPU instructions natively), but it requires a DirectX 12-capable GPU and driver to initialise its low-level graphics API layer. Windows 7 and older GPUs (pre-GCN AMD, pre-Kepler NVIDIA) cannot satisfy this requirement. Additionally, Xenia ships two separate builds: the stable build targets broad compatibility with well-tested titles, while Xenia Canary (the development branch) runs newer and more demanding games but can regress titles that work on stable. Running the wrong build for your game is the most common cause of "game does not load" after setup is otherwise correct.

Work through each fix in order. Most users resolve this at step 1 (game format) or step 2 (correct build).
