RetroArch won't load the Dolphin core — missing or stale dolphin_libretro.info

HighDolphin4 solutions

You went to Load Core in RetroArch and the Dolphin (GameCube / Wii) core either isn't in the list at all, appears but won't start, or throws a "failed to load core" / "info file not found" message. You may have copied the core's .dll/.so in by hand and it still won't run. GameCube/Wii games are impossible to launch because RetroArch never gets the core running in the first place.

Cause: A RetroArch core is two parts that must travel together — the core binary (dolphin_libretro.dll on Windows, .so on Linux/Android) and its metadata file dolphin_libretro.info. The .info file tells RetroArch what the core is, which systems and file extensions it handles, and how to display it in the menu. When you install the core through RetroArch's own Online Updater the two arrive together. When you copy a core in manually — or update RetroArch without refreshing core info — the .info file is often missing or out of date, so RetroArch either hides the core or refuses to load it.

This is a packaging/metadata gap, not a broken game or a Sys-folder problem. If the core does load but then crashes the moment you pick a game, that's the separate Sys folder missing crash — different failure, different fix.

Solutions

Solution 1

Prefer the built-in installer. In RetroArch go to Online Updater → Core Downloader → Dolphin (Nintendo - GameCube / Wii). This installs the core and its .info file in the correct directories automatically, and is the cleanest fix for "core not loading." Restart RetroArch fully (close and reopen) so it re-scans the cores and info directories.

To confirm: the Dolphin core now appears under Load Core with its proper name ("Nintendo - GameCube / Wii (Dolphin)") instead of being absent or greyed out, and selecting it no longer throws "failed to load core" / "info file not found." Information → Core Information should show supported extensions like .iso, .rvz, .gcm, confirming the .info is being read.

Solution 2

Refresh core info files. Still in Online Updater, run Update Core Info Files. This re-syncs every .info (including dolphin_libretro.info) to match your RetroArch version — it fixes the case where the core exists but the metadata is stale after a RetroArch update. Restart RetroArch afterward.

Solution 3

If you must install manually, place BOTH files:

  • Core binary → your Cores directory (Settings → Directory → Cores), e.g. RetroArch\cores\dolphin_libretro.dll.
  • Info file → your Core Info directory (Settings → Directory → Core Info), e.g. RetroArch\info\dolphin_libretro.info.

The base filename must match exactly (dolphin_libretro) in both folders. Confirm Settings → Directory for Cores and Core Info point to real, writable folders — a custom or read-only path can leave the .info orphaned. Reset them to defaults if unsure, then restart RetroArch.

Solution 4

Match architecture and version. A 32-bit core in a 64-bit RetroArch (or vice-versa), or a core built for a different RetroArch release, will fail to load even with the .info present. Use the core that the Online Updater serves for your installed RetroArch build, and check that no antivirus has quarantined the core .dll. Once the core loads, a GameCube/Wii game can still crash on launch if the Dolphin Sys folder isn't installed — that's the next step, covered in the Sys folder fix.
