AetherSX2 not working in 2025 — switch to NetherSX2 (the maintained fork)
AetherSX2 no longer works reliably, has been removed from the Google Play Store, and is no longer receiving updates. If you are trying to play PS2 games on Android in 2025, you need to use NetherSX2 — a community-maintained fork of AetherSX2 that continues where the original left off.
Symptoms that bring users to this page:
- "AetherSX2 won't install" or "not found on Play Store" — the original developer removed the app in January 2023 following harassment; the listing is gone and the APK on unofficial sites may be outdated or modified.
- "AetherSX2 crashes on startup" — older APK versions have not been patched against Android security updates and may fail on Android 13/14.
- "AetherSX2 says it needs a BIOS" — this requirement is the same in NetherSX2; see Solution 2 below.
- "PS2 games run poorly / too slow on Android" — performance tuning is different for mobile; see Solution 3.
Background: AetherSX2 was written by Tahlreth and released in 2021 as the first high-quality PS2 emulator for Android. In January 2023, the developer withdrew from the project citing sustained harassment and abuse. They deleted the Play Store listing and archived the repository. The community responded by forking the last good state of the code into NetherSX2, which continues active development with bug fixes, Android compatibility updates, and performance improvements.
NetherSX2 uses the same engine, the same settings, and accepts the same BIOS and game files as AetherSX2. If you were using AetherSX2, your save files, BIOS, and game library all transfer directly.

Download and install NetherSX2 from its official GitHub releases page. It is a direct replacement for AetherSX2 and takes the same BIOS and game files.
- Find the official NetherSX2 APK. Open a browser and search for NetherSX2 GitHub. The project is hosted on GitHub under the NetherSX2 organisation. Go to the Releases section and download the most recent APK file (the filename ends in
.apk). Do not install APKs from unofficial APK mirror sites — only use the GitHub releases page. - Allow installation from unknown sources. Because NetherSX2 is not on the Play Store, Android will ask for permission to install it. On Android 8+, go to Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps, then enable it for your browser or file manager, whichever you're using to open the APK.
- Install and open NetherSX2. Tap the downloaded APK to install, then open the app. The first-launch setup wizard will ask you to locate your PS2 BIOS (see Solution 2). The interface is nearly identical to AetherSX2.
- Migrating from AetherSX2: Your existing game saves, memory cards, and BIOS files all work in NetherSX2. Copy or move your AetherSX2 data folder (usually at
Android/data/xyz.aethersx2.android/files/) to the equivalent NetherSX2 folder, or simply point NetherSX2 to the same directories during first-run setup.
Note: never install AetherSX2 APKs from non-official sites — some modified versions have been found to contain adware or malware. NetherSX2's GitHub releases are the safe path forward.

NetherSX2 (and AetherSX2) require a PS2 BIOS file to run. This file is Sony's property and cannot be legally distributed — you must dump it from a PS2 console you own. Here is how.
- Understand what the BIOS is. The PS2 BIOS is a small file (usually named
SCPH-XXXXX.bin, around 4 MB) embedded in every PS2 console's ROM chip. It handles the startup, hardware initialisation, and core firmware. Without it, NetherSX2 cannot boot any game. Downloading it from the internet is copyright infringement — you need to extract it from a console you own. - Dump the BIOS from your PS2. The standard method uses a tool called PS2 BIOS Dumper — a homebrew program you run on your PS2 via a memory card exploit or a modchip. Search for "PS2 BIOS Dumper guide" on your PC's browser for detailed steps, as the exact method depends on whether your PS2 is a Fat, Slim, or modded unit. The output is a
.binfile around 4 MB. - Transfer the BIOS to your Android device. Copy the
.binfile to your phone's internal storage, for example into a folder namedBIOSin the root of your internal storage. - Point NetherSX2 to the BIOS. On first launch (or via Settings → BIOS), tap Refresh or Add directory and navigate to the folder where you stored the
.binfile. NetherSX2 will detect it automatically. Once it shows a BIOS version (e.g., "BIOS v2.00, NTSC-U") you are ready to add games.
EmuDesk does not link to pre-dumped BIOS files. You must dump from a console you own.

PS2 emulation is demanding — if your games run slowly, choppy, or with audio glitches on Android, these settings changes bring the largest performance gains on most mid-range and flagship Android devices.
- Set the EE Cycle Rate. In NetherSX2, go to Settings → System → EE Cycle Rate and set it to 50% (Underclocked) or 75%. The PS2's Emotion Engine CPU is very demanding to emulate at full speed. Underclocking by 25–50% is almost always imperceptible in-game but reduces CPU load significantly, unlocking smoother frame rates on phones that struggled at 100%.
- Choose the right renderer. Go to Settings → Graphics → Renderer. Vulkan is the best choice on devices with Android 7+ and a GPU that supports it (most 2019+ flagship chips). If you see visual glitches with Vulkan, fall back to OpenGL ES. Vulkan generally runs 10–20% faster and has better texture accuracy.
- Lower the internal resolution for demanding games. NetherSX2 defaults to rendering at 2× the PS2's native resolution (roughly 1024×896). For demanding games — Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus — drop this to 1× Native under Settings → Graphics → Internal Resolution. You will still get the benefit of smooth frame rates at the PS2's original sharpness, and you can raise it later once you verify your device handles the game well.
- Enable Fast Boot. In Settings → System, enable Fast Boot to skip the PS2 startup animation. This is cosmetic but cuts 5–10 seconds off each launch and avoids an occasional BIOS-screen hang on some devices.
