BlueStacks 5 Setup Guide — Install, Configure, and Best Settings for Gaming (2026)
Low4 solutions
I want to play Android mobile games on my PC using BlueStacks 5. I've downloaded it but I'm not sure how to configure it for the best performance — which graphics settings to use, how to set up keyboard controls, how to map a controller, and how to fix the lag or stuttering I'm experiencing.

Download and install BlueStacks 5:
- Download from the official BlueStacks website (bluestacks.com). Choose BlueStacks 5 — this is the current stable release. BlueStacks 10 is a cloud-streaming variant; BlueStacks 5 is the local emulator that runs fully offline.
- Run the installer as Administrator. BlueStacks installs a Hypervisor component (similar to VirtualBox/VMware) — it requires Virtualization enabled in BIOS (Intel VT-x or AMD-V). If the installer fails or BlueStacks won't launch, enter your BIOS and enable Virtualization (it's under CPU or Advanced settings).
- On first launch, BlueStacks opens with a default Android instance. You'll be asked to sign in with a Google account to access the Play Store. This is optional for sideloaded APKs but required for Play Store installs.
- Enable Hyper-V mode (recommended for Windows 10/11): In BlueStacks → Settings → Preferences → set Engine to Hyper-V if available. This uses Windows Hypervisor instead of the custom driver and gives better performance and stability on modern hardware. Requires Windows 10/11 Pro or later with Hyper-V feature enabled.
- If Hyper-V is not available: BlueStacks falls back to its own virtualization engine. Performance is acceptable but slightly lower than Hyper-V mode.
Set up your first game:
- Open the Play Store app inside BlueStacks, sign in, and install your game. For games not available in your region's Play Store (or if you have an APK), use the APK installer: drag-and-drop an APK file onto the BlueStacks window, or use the side toolbar's "Install APK" button.
- BlueStacks supports multiple instances — you can run two accounts of the same game simultaneously for multi-account play (Ctrl+Shift+8 to open the Multi-Instance Manager).

Open Settings (gear icon, top-right) → Performance:
- CPU cores: Set to at least 4 cores (or up to half your physical cores). Using all cores can cause system slowdown while BlueStacks is running. For gaming, 4 cores is the sweet spot on most 8-core systems.
- RAM: Set to 4 GB minimum. For demanding games (Genshin Impact, CODM, PUBG Mobile) use 6–8 GB if your system has 16+ GB RAM.
- Performance mode: Set to High Performance (not Balanced). This increases CPU priority and prevents BlueStacks from being throttled by Windows power management.
- Frame rate: Set to 60 FPS. For competitive games (CODM, PUBG Mobile), you can push to 90 or 120 FPS if your GPU supports it — check the game's in-game graphics settings to match.
Open Settings → Graphics:
- Graphics renderer: Choose DirectX (preferred on Nvidia/AMD discrete GPUs) or OpenGL (fallback for integrated/older GPUs). If you see graphical glitches on DirectX, switch to OpenGL.
- Graphics engine mode: Set to Performance for competitive gaming, or Compatibility if the game crashes on Performance mode.
- ASTC textures: Enable if available. BlueStacks 5 can decode ASTC textures in software — enabling this lets games load higher-quality assets that are intended for ARM devices, at the cost of slightly more VRAM. Recommended if your GPU has 4+ GB VRAM.
- Fullscreen: Press Alt+Enter or enable fullscreen in Display Settings. Running fullscreen reduces input latency compared to windowed mode.

Keyboard controls (Key Mapping):
- BlueStacks has a built-in Key Mapping editor. For games that support keyboard natively (rare in mobile), you don't need it. For games that use touch controls, Key Mapping lets you bind keyboard keys and mouse to on-screen buttons.
- Open a game → click the Keyboard icon in the right sidebar → Open editor. Drag control shortcuts onto the game screen. Common mappings: WASD for joystick, mouse for aim (shooter games), Q/E/R for skill buttons.
- For CODM: use the pre-built profile (BlueStacks ships an optimized CODM key mapping). Go to the sidebar → keyboard icon → choose the CODM preset.
- Game Controls editor: BlueStacks 5 introduced an improved "Advanced Game Controls" editor for FPS games — it includes aim-lock, fire button hold, and gyroscope simulation.
Controller support:
- BlueStacks 5 supports Xbox and PlayStation controllers natively via XInput. Plug in your controller → BlueStacks detects it automatically. In the Key Mapping editor, you can bind controller buttons to on-screen actions.
- For games with native gamepad support (like some arcade titles), the controller works directly without mapping.
- Note: some competitive mobile games (PUBG Mobile, CODM) detect controller input and may restrict matchmaking or require controller lobbies. Check the game's official controller policy.

common-bluestacks-errors-and-fixes (sortOrder=4)
BlueStacks won't open / black screen:
- Right-click the shortcut → Run as Administrator. BlueStacks requires admin rights on first launch to install its driver components.
- Update your GPU drivers (Nvidia GeForce Experience or AMD Adrenalin). Outdated drivers are the #1 cause of black screen on launch.
- Disable antivirus temporarily — some security software quarantines BlueStacks components. Add BlueStacks to your AV exclusion list after confirming it launches.
- If Virtualization is disabled: restart PC → enter BIOS (DEL/F2 on boot) → enable Intel VT-x or AMD-V → save and reboot.
BlueStacks very slow / high CPU:
- Reduce instance RAM in Settings → Performance (6+ GB instances use a lot of swap if your system doesn't have enough physical RAM).
- Close all background apps (browsers, Discord, etc.) before launching BlueStacks — it competes for CPU with everything else.
- Switch from Hyper-V to the default engine if Hyper-V is causing issues, or vice versa.
- BlueStacks runs best on discrete GPU systems. Integrated graphics (Intel Iris, AMD Vega) will give suboptimal performance for 3D games but work fine for card/casual games.
Play Store not working / sign-in loop:
- In BlueStacks, go to Settings (gear in BlueStacks toolbar, not Android settings) → Account → sign out and back in with your Google account.
- If Play Store shows "Your device isn't compatible": this is a Google Play certification issue. Use sideloaded APKs from official sources instead, or check if the game has a PC-native version.
