How to Set Up Cemu — Complete Wii U Emulator Guide 2026
I want to set up Cemu to play Wii U games — especially Breath of the Wild — on my PC. I downloaded it but don't know what settings to use for Vulkan, how to get the 60fps mod working, or where to add my games.
Solutions
Solution 1
What you need before you start:
- Cemu — download from cemu.info only. Click Download and grab the latest stable ZIP. Do not install from any other source — many sites host outdated or adware-bundled builds. Cemu is portable: unzip to
C:\Emulators\Cemu\. Do not useProgram Files— Windows restricts writes there and Cemu stores saves, shaders, and settings next to the executable. Windows Defender may flag it as PUA (false positive common to emulators) — allow it. - Wii U game dumps — dumped from your own discs or digital purchases using Dumpling (open-source, runs from the Wii U Homebrew Launcher). Dumpling exports games to SD card in RPX/FST folder format — this is the recommended format for Cemu (fastest loading, easiest to manage). WUD/WUX disc images also work.
- PC requirements:
- 720p/30fps: any modern 4-core CPU, any Vulkan-capable GPU, 8 GB RAM
- 1080p/60fps: 6-core/3.5 GHz+, GTX 1060 / RX 580 class, 16 GB RAM
- 4K/60fps BOTW: 8-core/4 GHz+, RTX 3070 / RX 6700 XT+, 16 GB RAM
First launch — key settings:
- Open
Cemu.exe. On first launch a setup wizard appears. - Graphics API: choose Vulkan. Vulkan is faster, has better async shader compilation, and reduces stutter. Exception: some older NVIDIA GTX 9xx/10xx cards crash with Vulkan — switch to OpenGL if you see immediate crashes after launching a game.
- GPU: select your discrete GPU from the dropdown. Laptops may default to Intel integrated — force the NVIDIA/AMD GPU here.
- Async Compile: ON. Without this, every new shader causes a 1–5 second freeze as it compiles. With async, shaders compile in the background (brief graphical artifact instead of a freeze).
Adding games:
- Options → Game Paths → click + → add the folder containing your game dumps.
- Cemu scans and displays your library. Double-click any title to launch.
Title keys (for encrypted formats): Dumpling exports a keys.txt alongside your dump. Place it in Cemu/keys.txt. If you're using RPX/FST from Dumpling, keys are embedded and you usually don't need a separate file.
Solution 2
Breath of the Wild optimization — BOTW runs at 30fps on real Wii U hardware. Unlocking 60fps requires Graphic Packs inside Cemu.
Setting up Graphic Packs:
- Options → Graphic Packs.
- Click Download latest community graphic packs (top-right). This pulls the community pack repo.
- In the BOTW section, enable these packs:
- FPS++ (60 fps) — unlocks the frame rate cap. The single most important mod.
- 4K / 1440p / 1080p resolution — renders at higher resolution before downsampling.
- Shadows: High — improves shadow resolution without major performance cost.
- Clarity / ReShade presets — optional post-processing (sharpening, color grading).
FPS++ requires a capable CPU. BOTW's physics are tied to frame rate. At 60fps your CPU must process physics 2× faster than at 30fps. If your CPU can't sustain 60fps consistently, physics behave erratically (sliding, weird climbing). Capping at 30fps via FPS++ settings remains stable on any hardware.
Shader cache warm-up: BOTW has thousands of shaders. First time you visit a new area, shaders compile on the fly — causing a brief freeze. After the first run, all compiled shaders are cached and subsequent sessions are smooth.
- To minimize: let the game run in a low-stakes area (Shrine of Resurrection or Kakariko Village) for 10–20 minutes before playing seriously.
- Community-compiled shader caches skip this warm-up entirely. Search "BOTW shader cache Cemu" for the most recent pack. Drop the
.bpsfile intoCemu/shaderCache/transferable/.
For other games, Cemu's Graphic Packs list covers enhancement packs for dozens of Wii U titles — browse the full list in the Graphic Packs dialog. See also: Cemu graphic packs not loading
Solution 3
Controller setup:
- Xbox controller: plug in via USB or Bluetooth. Cemu detects XInput automatically. Open Options → Input Settings → set Device to "Xinput" → map buttons. Default mapping is sensible for most games.
- DualShock 4 / DualSense: Cemu does not read DualShock natively via Bluetooth on Windows. Use DS4Windows (ds4windows.app) to map it as XInput. On Linux, the kernel handles these natively.
- Switch Pro Controller: works via USB without additional software. Bluetooth works on most Bluetooth adapters that support BLE.
- Wii U Gamepad: emulated in a separate Cemu window showing the second screen (inventory, maps). Drag it to a second monitor, or configure Cemu to overlay it on the main window via Options → Separate Gamepad View. For BOTW, gyro aiming requires DS4Windows passing DS4 gyroscope data through to Cemu.
Online play (Pretendo Network): Nintendo shut down Wii U online servers in April 2024. Pretendo Network is a fan-operated replacement restoring online play for Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, and others.
- Download the Pretendo patcher from pretendo.network (open-source).
- Run it with Cemu's directory as the target — patches the network config files.
- Create a free Pretendo account at pretendo.network.
- Launch a Pretendo-compatible game in Cemu and sign in with your Pretendo credentials.
Mario Kart 8 lobbies are consistently active. Splatoon servers are running but less populated than at launch.
Solution 4
Performance checklist:
- Vulkan selected in Graphics API (not OpenGL, unless you're on a problematic older NVIDIA card)
- Async shader compile: ON (Options → General Settings)
- CPU mode: Triple-core (Options → General Settings → CPU — usually the best mode)
- FPS++ enabled in Graphic Packs (BOTW only)
- V-Sync: Match refresh rate (prevents screen tearing without excess input lag)
- GPU driver up to date — Cemu's Vulkan path benefits from recent driver optimizations
Common errors and fixes:
- "Couldn't load title.tmd" — missing or corrupted game dump. Re-dump with Dumpling; confirm RPX folder structure is complete.
- Black screen on launch — wrong GPU selected, or API conflict. Switch Vulkan ↔ OpenGL; confirm correct GPU in Graphics settings.
- Missing keys.txt / encryption error — encrypted game format without keys. Dump
keys.txtfrom your Wii U via Dumpling, place in Cemu root. - BOTW crashes at shrine — missing shader cache or driver issue. Update GPU drivers; let shader cache warm up; try community transferable cache.
- Severe frame drops in towns (Kakariko) — shader compilation in progress. Normal on first visit; repeat visits smooth once cached.
- Audio stuttering / crackling — Options → Audio → increase buffer from 2000ms to 4000ms.
- Gamepad screen blank — open View → Gamepad in Cemu menu.
- FPS++ causes physics bugs — CPU can't hold 60fps consistently. Cap at 30fps via FPS++ settings.
- Online login fails — Nintendo servers shut down April 2024. Switch to Pretendo Network.
- High CPU usage, 1 core pegged — set CPU mode to Triple-core in General Settings.

Quick-start summary:
- Download Cemu from cemu.info (stable zip, portable)
- On first launch: Vulkan, discrete GPU, Async Compile ON
- Dump games with Dumpling → add folder via Options → Game Paths
- For BOTW: Options → Graphic Packs → download community packs → enable FPS++
- Let the shader cache warm up in a safe area for 10–20 min first session
- For online: install Pretendo patcher and create a Pretendo account
