Emulator Running Too Fast / Games at Double Speed Fix

Medium4 solutions

My emulator is running at double speed or some other abnormal rate — games feel fast-forwarded, audio sounds chipmunk-pitched, and timing is completely broken. I need to know how to bring the game speed back to normal.

Solutions

Solution 1

retroarch-vsync-fast-forward-speed-fix (sortOrder=1, isMostHelpful)

In RetroArch, go to Settings → Video → Synchronization and enable VSync. Then go to Settings → Frame Throttle and confirm Fast-Forward is OFF (the Fast-Forward toggle is often bound to a shoulder button and easy to accidentally hold).

Also check Settings → Frame Throttle → Throttle Rate — this should be 100%, not 200% or higher. If audio sounds chipmunk-pitched alongside the speed problem, verify Settings → Audio → Synchronization is also ON. After changing any of these settings, quit and relaunch RetroArch — driver changes do not take effect until restart.

If the issue happens in one game only, check the core options via Quick Menu → Options → Manage Core Options → Reset — a per-game core option may be overriding the global speed cap.

Solution 2

dolphin-speed-limit-fix (sortOrder=2)

In Dolphin, go to Options → Configure → Interface and confirm Limit Speed is checked. The default is 100%. While a game is running, the Tab key toggles the Dolphin speed limiter (Fast-Forward) — check that it is not stuck held down or remapped to a controller button you're accidentally pressing.

If Speed Limit is set to 200% in the menu, change it back to 100%. For dual-monitor setups, confirm Dolphin is rendering on the primary monitor — a refresh rate mismatch between monitors (e.g., Dolphin drawing to a 144 Hz monitor while VSync is locking to 60 Hz on the other) can cause unusual speed behavior on some GPU configurations.

Solution 3

pcsx2-duckstation-rpcs3-speed-fix (sortOrder=3)

PCSX2: Settings → General → find the Frame Limiter section and enable Limit Frames. Also confirm the Turbo key (Tab by default) is not held. For NTSC games the target is 59.94 Hz; PAL is 50 Hz — if the game runs at the wrong region speed, verify the disc region under Settings → Emulation.

DuckStation: Settings → General → Enable Frame Limiting must be checked. The default fast-forward key is also Tab. For PAL games running too fast on an NTSC system, check Settings → Console → Region.

RPCS3: Config → GPU → Frame Limit should be "Auto" or the game's native frame rate (not "Off"). Config → Core → Clock Scale should be 100%.

Solution 4

eden-switch-emulator-speed-fix (sortOrder=4)

In Eden (Switch emulator), go to Settings → General and confirm Speed is set to 100% (not 200%). The Fast-Forward shortcut in Eden is configurable under Settings → Hotkeys → Fast-Forward — check it is not mapped to a button you are accidentally holding.

If audio is pitch-shifted upward at the same time as the speed issue, the speed cap is definitely disabled rather than a core timing bug — re-enabling the limiter will restore both video speed and audio pitch. If only the audio sounds fast but the game renders normally, check your system audio sample rate settings (Windows Sound → Advanced → Default Format should be 48000 Hz for most emulators).
