Game Boy & Game Boy Color Emulator for PC: Complete 2026 Guide (SameBoy, mGBA)

Low5 solutions

I want to play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on PC. I've seen Game Boy Advance emulation but not sure which emulator handles the original GB and GBC hardware — are they the same? What's the best emulator for Game Boy and GBC, does it need a BIOS file, and how do I get the colors to look right on a modern monitor?

Best Emulator for Game Boy and Game Boy Color: SameBoy

SameBoy is the recommended emulator for original Game Boy (DMG) and Game Boy Color (CGB/GBC) games on PC. It achieves cycle-accurate hardware emulation — built by reverse-engineering the actual CPU, PPU, and APU behavior — while providing modern conveniences like save states, rewind, cheat code support, and high-quality display filters. No BIOS file is required (boot ROM is emulated internally).

Download and install SameBoy:

  1. Download the Windows release ZIP from sameboy.github.io.
  2. Extract anywhere — no installer needed.
  3. Open SameBoy.exe.
  4. File → Open ROM → select a .gb (Game Boy) or .gbc (Game Boy Color) file.
  5. The game starts immediately. No setup required.

Recommended first-launch settings:

  • Preferences → Display → Color Correction → Correct Colors: The original GBC LCD washed colors compared to an RGB monitor. "Correct Colors" applies hardware-accurate palette compensation so games look as intended on a modern display.
  • Preferences → Display → Scaling Filter → Scale2x or HQ2x: The native resolution is 160×144. Scale2x keeps pixels sharp; HQ2x smooths edges slightly. Avoid bilinear at low scales — it blurs.
  • Preferences → Display → Highpass Filter → Accurate: Removes DC offset from audio correctly, reducing low-end rumble that wasn't present on real hardware.

Loading a DMG game in GBC mode: Use File → Open with Model → Game Boy Color. The GBC applied default color palettes to original GB games — the same palettes the real hardware used, accessible by holding specific button combinations at the startup logo on real hardware. You can also pick custom palettes under Preferences → Game Boy → Color Palette for DMG Games.

GB vs GBC at a glance:

FeatureGame Boy (DMG, 1989)Game Boy Color (CGB, 1998)
Display4-shade monochrome (greenish)Full color (32,768 colors)
CPU speed4.19 MHz8.39 MHz (double-speed mode)
RAM8 KB32 KB
Backward compat—Plays all original GB carts with colorization

ROM formats SameBoy accepts: .gb (original Game Boy), .gbc (Game Boy Color), .sgb (Super Game Boy), .zip / .7z (compressed — reads directly without extraction).

Save states vs battery saves: Original GB/GBC carts used a coin-cell battery to retain saves. In SameBoy, battery saves live as .sav files next to your ROM and persist between sessions automatically. Save states (Ctrl+S) are snapshots of the full emulator state — use them freely, they don't replace in-game saves.

Cheat codes: Cheats → Add Cheat — supports Game Genie (xxx-xxx or xxx-xxx-xxx format) and GameShark Pro (8-digit hex). GameFAQs has full code databases for every game.

System requirements: Minimal — any x86-64 CPU (even 1 GHz), 64 MB RAM, no GPU required. SameBoy uses under 1% CPU on any post-2010 processor.

Alternative: mGBA (covers GB + GBC + GBA in one emulator)

If you're already using mGBA for Game Boy Advance games, you don't need a separate emulator — mGBA handles original GB and GBC ROMs as well. The same setup covers all three systems.

Load a .gb or .gbc file through File → Load ROM exactly as you would a GBA ROM. mGBA auto-detects the system type from the file header.

mGBA also supports RetroAchievements (Settings → Enhancements → Achievements) and has a shader system via libretro when used as a RetroArch core. On accuracy, SameBoy edges ahead for edge-case timing, but mGBA is excellent for all commercial games.

Download mGBA: mgba.io — available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

Link Cable Emulation: Pokémon Trades and Two-Player Games

The original GB link cable carried serial data between two handhelds. SameBoy emulates this locally between two instances on the same PC:

  1. Open SameBoy instance #1 normally (your primary game).
  2. Open a second SameBoy window.
  3. In the second window: File → Open Link Cable Slave → load the same game.
  4. Both instances now share a virtual link cable — use it for Pokémon trades, two-player Tetris battles, and other link-cable games.

Both game copies must be the same version and region for trades to work correctly. For Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow trades, both ROMs must be compatible generation (Gen 1 only trades with Gen 1).

Best Game Boy and Game Boy Color Games to Play on PC

Original Game Boy (DMG) essentials:

  • Tetris — the console launch title; still the definitive portable Tetris
  • Pokémon Red / Blue — 151 Pokémon, the original adventure
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening — one of the best Zelda games despite the hardware limitations
  • Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins — Mario with genuinely creative worlds (space, macro-land, Mario's castle as a level)
  • Donkey Kong '94 — 100-level puzzle platformer far beyond the arcade original
  • Metroid II: Return of Samus — dark, atmospheric, and essential for Metroid fans
  • Kirby's Dream Land — Kirby's debut, short but excellent

Game Boy Color (GBC) essentials:

  • Pokémon Gold / Silver — two regions, day/night cycle, 251 Pokémon, the series' high point for many
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages / Seasons — two linked games with a combined true ending
  • Wario Land 3 — no death mechanic, pure exploration; the best Wario Land game
  • Shantae — rare, polished action platformer; the original before the series became multiplatform
  • Dragon Warrior Monsters — monster-taming RPG that predates and influenced later games in the genre
  • Metal Gear Solid (GBC) — actual port of the PS1 game in top-down perspective
  • Pokémon Crystal — adds animated sprites and the Battle Tower; the definitive Gen 2 version

Super Game Boy: Playing GB Games on SNES with Color Borders

The Super Game Boy was a SNES cartridge that ran Game Boy games on a TV with color borders and developer-designed colorization. SameBoy emulates it under File → Open with Model → Super Game Boy or Super Game Boy 2.

SGB mode gives you the borders developers designed (often elaborate pixel-art frames) and the SGB-specific color palettes — sometimes quite different from GBC's default colorization. Games like DKC, Donkey Kong '94, and Kirby's Dream Land 2 have elaborate SGB borders worth seeing.

If using RetroArch, the SameBoy core handles SGB via the bsnes integration path — enable it under core options.
