How to Record Emulator Gameplay With OBS 2026 — Best Settings Per Emulator
I want to record or stream my emulator gameplay using OBS Studio, but I'm getting a black screen on the capture, or my recordings are laggy, or I can't figure out which capture method to use for RPCS3, Dolphin, PPSSPP, or other emulators. What's the correct OBS setup?
Solutions
Solution 1
OBS has three capture methods: Game Capture, Window Capture, and Display Capture. The right one depends on the emulator. Using the wrong method causes the most common problem — a black screen.
| Emulator | Best OBS Capture Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| RPCS3 | Window Capture | Game Capture doesn't hook RPCS3's Vulkan renderer. Window Capture works reliably. |
| Dolphin | Game Capture or Window Capture | Game Capture works with OpenGL and Vulkan. If black screen, switch to Window Capture. |
| PCSX2 | Game Capture or Window Capture | Game Capture works for most users. Use Window Capture as fallback. |
| Eden (Switch) | Window Capture | Vulkan-based renderer; Game Capture may produce black screen. Window Capture is safe. |
| Cemu | Game Capture or Window Capture | Either works; Game Capture is preferred for slightly better performance. |
| PPSSPP | Game Capture or Window Capture | Both work. Game Capture hooks cleanly. |
| DuckStation | Game Capture or Window Capture | Either works. Use Display Capture only as last resort (captures whole screen). |
| RetroArch | Game Capture | Works well; RetroArch has native OBS integration (see S3). |
| GameLoop / BlueStacks | Window Capture or Display Capture | Game Capture doesn't hook Android emulators reliably. Window Capture works. |
General rule of thumb:
- Try Game Capture first (lowest performance impact, cleanest capture).
- If you get a black screen, switch to Window Capture.
- If Window Capture also fails (usually due to hardware-accelerated rendering), use Display Capture as a last resort (captures your entire screen — just resize the capture to the emulator window area).
GPU compatibility: On systems with both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU (laptop or mid-range PC), make sure OBS and the emulator are running on the same GPU. If the emulator runs on your Nvidia GPU but OBS captures via the Intel iGPU, you'll get a black screen. In Nvidia Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings, set both OBS and the emulator to the same GPU.
Solution 2
Recommended OBS settings for recording emulator gameplay:
In OBS: File → Settings → Output → Recording
- Type: Standard (default)
- Recording Format: MKV (safe against corruption if OBS crashes; convert to MP4 later via File → Remux Recordings)
- Encoder: Hardware encoder if available —
NVENC H.264(Nvidia) orH264 AMF(AMD). Hardware encoding offloads compression to your GPU, freeing CPU for the emulator. - Rate Control: CQP (Constant Quantizer) or CRF for hardware encoders. Set Quality to 18–22 for archive quality, 25–28 for smaller file sizes.
- Bitrate (if using CBR): 40–60 Mbps for 1080p60, 80–120 Mbps for 1440p60.
Video settings (OBS Settings → Video):
- Base (Canvas) Resolution: Match your monitor (e.g. 1920×1080 or 2560×1440).
- Output (Scaled) Resolution: Same as base, or downscale to 1080p if your emulator renders at 4K.
- FPS: Match the emulator's target FPS — 60 for most games.
If you don't have a hardware encoder (iGPU only): use x264 software encoding with preset veryfast or superfast and CRF 22. Slower presets (like medium) add significant CPU load that will slow your emulator.
Audio settings: OBS Settings → Audio → set the Desktop Audio device to your headphone/speaker output and optionally add a Mic. Use 48,000 Hz sample rate (matches most emulators' audio output).
Solution 3
RetroArch has a built-in OBS integration that bypasses the need for a separate capture source. This gives cleaner, low-overhead capture compared to window/game capture.
Enable RetroArch → OBS integration:
- In RetroArch: Settings → User Interface → Show Advanced Settings → ON.
- Settings → Video → Video Filters → GPU Screenshot — make sure this is on (needed for the OBS source to show frame data).
- In OBS: Add Source → RetroArch Game Capture (installs as a plugin from the OBS Plugin Store, called "obs-libretro" or find it on obsproject.com/wiki/Plugins). Once installed, it shows RetroArch's framebuffer directly.
Alternative (easier): Window Capture + RetroArch windowed mode
- In RetroArch: Settings → Video → Fullscreen → OFF. Run RetroArch in a window.
- In OBS: Add Source → Window Capture → select RetroArch. This works 100% of the time without plugins.
For streaming (not just recording): RetroArch also has a built-in streaming mode (Settings → Recording → Use output as video source) that sends frames directly to OBS. Useful for very low-end PCs where even Window Capture adds a few ms of latency.
Solution 4
Black screen in OBS when capturing emulator:
- Switch capture method — from Game Capture to Window Capture, or vice versa. This fixes 80% of black screen cases with emulators.
- Run OBS as Administrator — right-click OBS shortcut → Run as administrator. Some emulators using DirectX 12 or Vulkan require elevated permissions for OBS to hook them.
- Same GPU as emulator — see the GPU tip in S1. Mismatched GPU assignment is the #2 cause of OBS black screen with emulators.
- Enable compatibility mode in Game Capture — in OBS, click the Game Capture source → Properties → enable Allow Transparency or Capture Third-party Overlays. Some emulators need these flags.
- For Vulkan emulators (RPCS3, Eden): install the OBS Vulkan Capture plugin from the OBS plugin repository. This adds a Vulkan hook that captures Vulkan-rendered windows directly, fixing black screen for emulators OBS can't hook via D3D.
Recording is laggy / emulator slows down during recording:
- Switch to a hardware encoder (NVENC / AMF) — software encoding (x264) competes with the emulator for CPU. A hardware encoder uses your GPU encoder block with almost zero CPU overhead.
- Lower the OBS output resolution or FPS temporarily to reduce encoding load.
- Close Discord overlay and other GPU hooks while recording — they add latency to the capture pipeline.
Audio out of sync in recordings:
- In OBS: File → Settings → Advanced → Audio → set Audio Buffering to 512ms or higher. This gives OBS more buffer to synchronize audio with video frames from the emulator.
- If the audio is consistently ahead or behind: in your Audio Mixer panel, click the gear icon on Desktop Audio → Filters → add an Audio Sync Offset (positive value delays audio to sync with video; negative advances it).
- Variable FPS in the emulator (due to shader compilation stutter) causes audio drift in recordings. The stutter goes away after shader warm-up — re-record after the first playthrough of each area to get a clean take.
