LaunchBox Setup Guide — How to Add Emulators and Games (Windows 2026)
I want to use LaunchBox as a single launcher to organize and run all my emulators and game ROMs. How do I set it up, connect my emulators, and get box art and metadata to appear automatically?

What LaunchBox is: LaunchBox is a free Windows frontend that organizes all your emulators and games in one place. It displays box art, ratings, videos, and game descriptions, and can launch each game through the correct emulator automatically. The premium BigBox mode adds a TV/controller-friendly fullscreen interface. LaunchBox itself is free; BigBox is paid (or bundled with premium).
Download and install:
- Go to launchbox-app.com → Download (the official site — avoid third-party mirror downloads).
- Run the installer. LaunchBox installs into a self-contained folder (default:
C:\Users\[name]\LaunchBox\). The folder IS the installation — you can move it or copy it to another drive without reinstalling. - On first launch, the Import Wizard opens automatically. You can use it now or close it and set up emulators manually first (recommended for new users — manual is more reliable).
Folder structure before adding games:
LaunchBox\Emulators\— where you can place emulator folders (optional; emulators can also live anywhere)LaunchBox\Games\— default ROM storage location (you can point LaunchBox at your existing ROM folders instead)LaunchBox\Images\— box art and screenshots (auto-populated by the metadata download)
Add your first emulator manually:
- In LaunchBox → Tools → Manage Emulators.
- Click Add. Enter a name (e.g. "PCSX2") and browse to the emulator's executable (e.g.
pcsx2-qt.exe). - Under Associated Platforms, link the emulator to the platform(s) it handles (e.g. "Sony PlayStation 2").
- Leave command-line parameters blank for most emulators — LaunchBox auto-fills the ROM path when launching.
- Click OK. Repeat for each emulator (Dolphin, RetroArch, PPSSPP, etc.).
Special case — RetroArch: Add RetroArch's retroarch.exe as the emulator. For the command-line parameters field, enter: -L "cores\{core_name}.dll" "{rom_path}". LaunchBox has built-in RetroArch profiles under Tools → Manage Emulators → RetroArch (premium), or you can add cores manually for free by creating one emulator entry per core.

Import ROMs into LaunchBox:
- Go to Tools → Import → ROM Files.
- Browse to your ROM folder (or a specific ROM file). LaunchBox supports bulk import of an entire folder structure.
- Select the Platform this ROM set belongs to (e.g. "Sony PlayStation 2") — LaunchBox uses this to search the right metadata database.
- Select the Emulator from the dropdown — the one you added in step S1.
- On the next screen, LaunchBox tries to match each ROM filename to its database entry and shows you a list with confidence scores. Games it's unsure about can be manually matched — click the ROM name to search manually.
- Check "Download metadata and media". LaunchBox will pull box art, descriptions, ratings, release dates, and genre from LaunchBox Games Database (free, login optional) and IGDB.
- Click Import. The download runs in the background; larger libraries take several minutes.
After import — what you'll see: Each game shows up in LaunchBox's library with a box art thumbnail. You can click a game to see its details pane (description, release date, rating, screenshots). Double-click to launch through the assigned emulator.
Tip — bulk re-download missing images: Right-click any platform in the left sidebar → Download Metadata and Media → runs a fresh scan for games that are missing box art or have incomplete metadata.

BigBox is LaunchBox's fullscreen, controller-driven interface designed for TV setups. It requires a LaunchBox Premium license, but a 30-day trial is included.
Enable BigBox: Press the BigBox button in LaunchBox's top toolbar, or press B from the main window. BigBox launches fullscreen with a console-style grid of your game covers.
Controller navigation in BigBox:
- D-pad/analog stick: navigate the game grid.
- A/Cross: launch the selected game.
- B/Circle: back / open the platform list.
- Start/Options: open the pause menu while a game is running (if BigBox pause screen is enabled — it intercepts the button before the emulator sees it).
Themes: BigBox supports custom themes (downloadable from launchbox-app.com/forums). Drop theme folders into LaunchBox\Themes\ and select them in BigBox → Settings → Themes. The default "Default" theme is clean and fast; community themes like "Colorful" and "Unified Redux" are popular.
Auto-start BigBox at boot: BigBox → Settings → Startup → enable "Launch BigBox on Windows Startup". Useful for a dedicated emulation PC or HTPC that boots straight into the game library.
solution #910
Game won't launch — "could not find emulator":
- Right-click the game → Edit → check the Emulator field is set correctly. A game might have been imported without an emulator assigned.
- Go to Tools → Manage Emulators and verify the emulator path still exists. If you moved the emulator folder, update the path here.
Box art not downloading / missing images:
- LaunchBox pulls images from its own servers. Confirm you have an internet connection and the LaunchBox servers are up (check launchbox-app.com for announcements).
- Right-click the game → Download Metadata and Media to retry for a specific game.
- For games LaunchBox doesn't recognize (homebrews, unlicensed ROMs), you can manually add box art: right-click the game → Edit → Images tab → drag a JPG/PNG into the appropriate slot.
Emulator opens but game doesn't load / wrong game loads:
- LaunchBox passes the ROM path as a command-line argument. If your emulator needs a special flag (e.g. RetroArch needs the core specified), add it in the emulator's Command-Line Parameters field in Manage Emulators.
- Check the Associated Platforms for the emulator — LaunchBox will only auto-assign that emulator to games on the linked platforms. A game on the wrong platform won't match.
LaunchBox is slow with a large library:
- Go to Tools → Options → Performance and enable Cache Images and set Image Cache Size to 500-1000 MB (LaunchBox keeps decoded images in memory for faster navigation). On mechanical HDDs, ensure your
LaunchBox\Images\folder is on an SSD if possible. - Large video preview collections (mp4 attract-mode videos per game) significantly slow BigBox. Disable them in BigBox → Settings → Videos → uncheck "Play game videos in list view" until your drive can handle it.
