Neo Geo Emulator for PC 2026: FinalBurn Neo Setup + Metal Slug, KOF, Samurai Shodown
I want to emulate Neo Geo games on PC — Metal Slug, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown. I've heard I need a BIOS file, but I'm not sure where to put it or what format the ROMs need to be in. Which emulator should I use — FinalBurn Neo or MAME? How do I get the BIOS setup right so games actually launch?
Solutions
Solution 1
Best Emulator for Neo Geo: FinalBurn Neo (FBNeo)
FinalBurn Neo (FBNeo) is the recommended emulator for Neo Geo MVS/AES and Neo Geo CD games. It supports the full Neo Geo library alongside CPS-1, CPS-2, and other SNK/Capcom arcade hardware. Key advantages over MAME: GGPO rollback netplay for online fighting game play, cleaner interface for casual use, and RetroAchievements support via the RetroArch core.
Install FBNeo (standalone):
- Download the latest Windows release from github.com/finalburnneo/FBNeo/releases — take the
FBNeo-*.zipfile. - Extract to a permanent folder (e.g.,
C:\Emulators\FBNeo\). - Create a
roms\subfolder inside that directory. - Open
FinalBurn Neo.exe. - File → Rescan ROMs after placing ROMs — the game list populates.
BIOS Setup — neogeo.zip (Required):
Neo Geo emulation requires a BIOS file named exactly neogeo.zip. This file must sit in the same roms\ folder as your game ROMs — not extracted, just the ZIP itself. FBNeo looks for it automatically when launching any Neo Geo game.
What neogeo.zip must contain:
- uni-bios_4_0.rom (Unibios 4.0 — highly recommended; region-free, adds BIOS-level cheats)
- Standard MVS/AES regional BIOS files (sp-s2.sp1, sp-u2.sp1, neo-geo.rom, etc.)
Unibios recommendation: Include Unibios 4.0 in your neogeo.zip. Access the Unibios menu by holding A+B+C during the SNK startup animation. The menu lets you switch between MVS (arcade, credits) and AES (home, life bar) mode, enable BIOS-level infinite lives/credits, and remove regional content differences.
ROM structure — do not extract game ZIPs:
Neo Geo games in MAME/FBNeo format are structured as nested ZIPs:
roms\
neogeo.zip ← BIOS (required)
mslug.zip ← Metal Slug
kof98.zip ← King of Fighters '98
samsho2.zip ← Samurai Shodown II
Each game ZIP contains multiple .bin / .rom files representing the original arcade board's program, character, and sound ROMs. Do NOT extract these ZIPs — FBNeo reads them compressed. Extracting breaks the expected structure.
Recommended FBNeo settings after first launch:
- Video → Aspect Ratio → Keep Aspect Ratio: preserves the 4:3 arcade image without stretching.
- Video → Filter → Point: sharp pixel art. Use Linear only if you prefer smoothed edges.
- Input → Configure: map your gamepad. Neo Geo uses 4 buttons (A, B, C, D) + Start + Select. A standard Xbox/PlayStation layout works perfectly.
Solution 2
FinalBurn Neo vs MAME: Which Should You Use?
| Feature | FinalBurn Neo | MAME |
|---|---|---|
| Setup complexity | Simple | Moderate |
| Accuracy | Very high | Highest (reference emulator) |
| GGPO netplay | Yes (built-in) | No |
| RetroAchievements | Yes (via RetroArch core) | Limited |
| Systems covered | Neo Geo + CPS + select arcade | 10,000+ arcade boards |
| Ideal for | Playing and online KOF/SS/MS | Accuracy research, obscure boards |
Choose FBNeo for playing games and online multiplayer. Choose MAME if you need the highest accuracy for a specific timing-sensitive title or you're exploring hardware beyond Neo Geo.
Solution 3
Best Neo Geo Games to Play on PC
Metal Slug Series (Run-and-Gun):
- Metal Slug X — Enhanced version of Metal Slug 2; fixes slowdown, adds weapons. Best entry point for newcomers.
- Metal Slug 3 — The series' masterpiece: enormous, branching missions, inventive bosses. Start here after Metal Slug X.
- Metal Slug — The original (1996); tight and fast. Worth playing to see how it started.
- Metal Slug 4 / 5 — Solid but outsourced; play after finishing 1/X/3.
King of Fighters Series (3-on-3 Fighting):
- KOF '98 — Community consensus best-of-series; the tournament standard. Balanced, deep, large roster.
- KOF 2002 — Alongside '98 the competitive standard; returns to classic mechanics after the Striker years.
- KOF '94 — The original with fixed national teams; good for experiencing the series origin.
Samurai Shodown Series (Weapons Fighting):
- Samurai Shodown II — Widely considered the best entry; tighter and more balanced than the original. One katana hit = 30-50% damage. Start here.
- Samurai Shodown IV — Adds Bust/Slash mode duality; last of the classic era peaks.
Fatal Fury Series:
- Garou: Mark of the Wolves (1999) — The last Fatal Fury game and one of the finest 2D fighters ever made. Has an active tournament scene today.
- Real Bout Fatal Fury Special — Community favorite in the RB sub-series.
Other Notable Games:
- Puzzle Bobble / Bust-A-Move — The original arcade version; still among the best puzzle games ever.
- Last Blade 2 — Weapons fighter that rivals Garou; excellent late-era title.
- Windjammers — Air hockey with special moves; active retro competitive scene.
- Blazing Star — Fast, beautiful shoot-em-up with memorable boss designs.
- Neo Bomberman — Up to 5 players; use netplay for full chaos.
Solution 4
Playing KOF and Samurai Shodown Online: GGPO Netplay
FBNeo uses GGPO rollback netplay — the gold standard for fighting game online play. Rollback predicts inputs locally and corrects when wrong, giving 60fps gameplay feel on connections up to ~100ms latency.
In FBNeo standalone:
- Host: Network → Start Netplay Server; share your IP and port.
- Join: Network → Connect to Server; enter host IP.
- Both players need byte-identical ROM files (same CRC) for the session to sync.
FightCade (recommended for matchmaking): FightCade is the community platform for Neo Geo and CPS online play — it provides matchmaking lobbies, leaderboards, and chat around a custom FBA-based client. It has active lobbies for KOF '98, KOF 2002, Samurai Shodown II, Garou, and Metal Slug for co-op. Search "FightCade download" to get the client — it's free.
Solution 5
CRT Shaders for Authentic Arcade Look
Neo Geo games were designed for CRT arcade monitors. On modern flat panels the raw pixels look different — harder edges, different color rendering. Shaders recreate the original look.
Via RetroArch + FBNeo core:
- Load RetroArch, set Core to FBNeo, load your Neo Geo game.
- Open Quick Menu → Shaders → Load Shader Preset.
- Navigate to
shaders_glsl/crt/. - Recommended presets for Neo Geo: crt-easymode.glslp (good quality, moderate GPU cost) or crt-royale.glslp (high quality, heavier GPU).
- Set internal resolution to 2× or 3× for the shader to render at sufficient quality.
The scanline overlay darkens alternate rows to simulate the electron beam gaps of a CRT monitor, and the phosphor bloom softens color transitions in a way the original arcade display produced. At 3× internal resolution + crt-easymode, the result is very close to what an SNK MVS cabinet looked like.
