No sound in emulator: audio not working fix (RetroArch, PPSSPP, PCSX2, Dolphin)

High4 solutions

Your emulator launches and the game runs, but there is no audio — no music, no sound effects, complete silence. This is one of the most common emulator setup issues and almost always has a straightforward fix: either Windows is routing audio incorrectly, the emulator's audio output driver is misconfigured, or an in-emulator mute setting is on.

Work through the solutions below from top to bottom. Most cases resolve at Step 1 or 2.

Solution 1

check-windows-audio-mixer-and-output-device (sortOrder=1, isMostHelpful)

Before touching emulator settings, confirm Windows is routing the emulator's audio to the correct output device. Windows often silences new applications in the volume mixer, or routes them to a device you are not listening to.

  1. While the emulator and game are running, right-click the speaker icon in the Windows taskbar and choose Open Volume Mixer. On Windows 11 you may need: System → Sound → Volume Mixer.
  2. Look for the emulator (PPSSPP, RetroArch, pcsx2.exe, Dolphin, etc.) in the mixer. If its volume is at 0 or the mixer shows a mute icon, drag it to 100 and un-mute it.
  3. Check the Output Device in the mixer or at the top of Sound settings. If you recently plugged in or unplugged headphones/speakers/HDMI, Windows may have switched the default output device to one you are not using. Set the correct device as default.
  4. For HDMI monitors or capture cards: the display device often registers as a separate audio output in Windows. If your audio is going to HDMI, ensure that device is not muted and is your playback default.
  5. After confirming mixer settings, test audio in another app (browser video or music player) to confirm your speakers or headphones work at the OS level before blaming the emulator.

If the OS audio is working fine elsewhere but the emulator is still silent, continue to Solution 2.

Solution 2

change-emulator-audio-output-driver (sortOrder=2, isMostHelpful=false)

Each emulator has its own audio output driver setting. The default driver is not always the correct one for your system. Switching drivers is the single most effective fix for emulator-specific silence.

RetroArch:

  1. Go to Settings → Audio → Output.
  2. The Audio Driver field shows the current driver (often XAudio2 or DirectSound). Try each available driver in order: wasapi → xaudio → dsound.
  3. After changing the driver, go to Main Menu → Quit RetroArch, restart it, and test. RetroArch must restart for the audio driver change to apply.
  4. Also confirm: Settings → Audio → Enable Audio is set to ON (it can be toggled off accidentally).

PPSSPP:

  1. Go to Settings → Audio.
  2. Change Backend from the current setting to another option. Try: XAudio2 first; if silent, try DirectSound or SDL.
  3. Also verify: Enable Sound checkbox is checked at the top of the Audio settings page.

PCSX2:

  1. Go to Settings → Audio.
  2. Under Audio Backend, try switching from XAudio2 to Cubeb (recommended for most users) or vice versa.
  3. Set Output Module to your active speaker/headphone device if multiple devices are listed.

Dolphin:

  1. Go to Options → Audio Settings.
  2. Change Audio Backend from the current setting. Try WASAPI → XAudio2 → DirectSound in order.
  3. Confirm the output device shown matches your active audio hardware.

Solution 3

check-in-game-and-emulator-mute-settings (sortOrder=3, isMostHelpful=false)

Some emulators have multiple in-application audio controls — and it is easy to accidentally mute audio within the emulator without touching Windows settings.

  • RetroArch hotkey mute: RetroArch binds a mute toggle to a controller button or keyboard key. During gameplay, check the RetroArch Quick Menu (F1 by default) → Audio → confirm the mute toggle is OFF. You can also see the active audio status in the top-right HUD (enable Notifications if not showing).
  • PPSSPP in-game volume: some PSP games have their own volume slider inside the game pause menu, separate from PPSSPP's system setting. If the OS and PPSSPP are both unmuted but a specific game is silent, check the game's own audio options.
  • Dolphin DSP backend: if Dolphin shows audio but a specific GameCube game is silent, switch the DSP Emulator Engine from DSP LLE Interpreter to DSP HLE (or vice versa) under Audio Settings. Some games require a specific DSP mode.
  • PCSX2 SPU2: under Settings → Audio, confirm Output Volume is not at 0. The PCSX2 audio mixer has a separate volume from Windows; it defaults to 100% but can be changed.
  • Windows exclusive mode conflict: if one application has claimed exclusive audio access (common with gaming audio software, Discord, or streaming tools), other applications including emulators may get no audio output. Close other audio-heavy applications or disable exclusive mode: Windows Sound → Playback → (your device) Properties → Advanced → uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control."

Solution 4

emulator-specific-audio-reinstall-and-reset (sortOrder=4, isMostHelpful=false)

If the above steps do not resolve the silence, a corrupted configuration file or missing audio component is the likely cause. Here is how to reset per emulator.

RetroArch — reset audio config:

  1. Close RetroArch. Navigate to your RetroArch folder and open retroarch.cfg in a text editor.
  2. Search for lines starting with audio_driver, audio_enable, and audio_volume. Delete those lines only, then save.
  3. Relaunch RetroArch — it will regenerate defaults for those values. Then set your preferred driver manually under Settings → Audio → Output.

PCSX2 — missing audio plugin on older builds:

  1. PCSX2 nightly builds (1.7+) bundle audio internally. If you are on a very old PCSX2 version (pre-1.6), the SPU2-X audio plugin may not have installed correctly. Download the current PCSX2 nightly from pcsx2.net instead.

Missing VC++ or DirectX runtime:

  1. Many emulators require Visual C++ Redistributables (2015–2022 x64) and DirectX End-User Runtimes for their audio APIs to function. Download both from Microsoft's official site if you have not already installed them.
  2. After installing, restart your PC before retesting the emulator.

Android-specific (PPSSPP / Dolphin / RetroArch Android):

  • On Android, ensure the emulator app has been granted Microphone permission if your device requires it for audio output initialization (this is device-dependent, common on certain Android skins).
  • Switch the audio backend inside the Android emulator settings: PPSSPP → Settings → Audio → Backend → try OpenSL ES vs AAudio. Dolphin Android → Settings → Audio Backend → OpenSL ES is generally more compatible than AAudio on older devices.
