PPSSPP iPhone and iPad — PSP Emulator iOS Setup Guide 2026

Medium4 solutions

I want to play PSP games on my iPhone or iPad using PPSSPP. I installed it from the App Store but I'm not sure how to add games, connect a controller, or change graphics settings. How do I get PPSSPP working on iOS and what settings give the best performance?

Install PPSSPP from the App Store

  1. Open the App Store and search PPSSPP. Install the free version by Henrik Rydgård. PPSSPP requires iOS 12 or later and runs on any iPhone 6s or newer; iPhone 11 or newer is recommended for full-speed emulation of demanding titles.
  2. PPSSPP Gold (paid) is identical in features — it is a donation version. The free version has no limitations.

Add PSP games (ISO and CSO format)

PPSSPP does not include games. You need ISO or CSO files dumped from UMD discs you own.

  • Option A — Files app (iCloud Drive or local): Transfer your .iso or .cso files to your iPhone via AirDrop from a Mac, USB cable (macOS Finder or iTunes), or iCloud Drive. In PPSSPP, tap Games → navigate the Files browser to your folder and tap a game to launch it.
  • Option B — Wi-Fi file transfer: In PPSSPP tap Settings → Tools → Remote ISO Server to serve files from your Mac/PC over Wi-Fi, or use a local network file browser like Infuse to place files into the PPSSPP folder in iCloud Drive.

Supported formats

  • .iso — standard disc image (direct copy from UMD)
  • .cso — compressed disc image (smaller file, same compatibility)
  • .pbp — PSP digital download / eboot format (PSN titles converted)

PPSSPP iOS reads from any Files app location: iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or third-party storage apps (Dropbox, Google Drive).

Connecting a Bluetooth controller

  1. Pair your controller via iOS Settings → Bluetooth. PPSSPP supports DualSense (PS5), DualShock 4 (PS4), Xbox Wireless controllers, and MFi controllers.
  2. Once paired, launch a game in PPSSPP. Physical buttons are mapped automatically — the left stick, right stick, face buttons, and triggers all work out of the box.
  3. To remap buttons: PPSSPP Settings → Controls → Control Mapping → tap any action and press the button you want to assign.

On-screen touch controls

  • Default touch layout mirrors the PSP button layout. To resize or reposition buttons: Settings → Controls → Touch Control Layout → drag buttons to your preferred position.
  • For games using the analog stick heavily (racing, 3D action), a physical controller is strongly recommended — the virtual stick on touchscreen is less precise.

Analog stick on older controllers

DualShock 3 and older Bluetooth controllers are not officially supported on iOS. Use DualSense, DualShock 4, or an Xbox Wireless controller for best compatibility.

Recommended settings for most iPhone models

  • Backend: Settings → Graphics → Backend: Metal. Metal is Apple's native GPU API and gives the best performance and compatibility on iOS — always prefer it over OpenGL ES.
  • Rendering resolution: Settings → Graphics → Rendering Resolution: 2× PSP (960×544) is a good balance. Modern iPhones (12 and later) handle 3× or 4× without slowdown in most games; older models should stay at 2×.
  • Texture filtering: Settings → Graphics → Texture Filtering: Anisotropic 8× sharpens distant textures with minimal performance cost.
  • Frame skipping: Leave at 0 (disabled) unless a demanding game drops frames. Even then, frame skipping rarely improves the experience — lower resolution first.

For demanding games (God of War: CoO, Crisis Core, GTA VCS)

  • Drop rendering resolution to 2× PSP.
  • Disable Post-Processing Shader (Settings → Graphics → Screen).
  • Enable Hardware tessellation only on iPhone 12 Pro and newer.

Game doesn't appear in PPSSPP's file browser

  • iOS sandboxing restricts PPSSPP from browsing every folder. Place your ISOs in the PPSSPP folder inside iCloud Drive (visible under "iCloud Drive" in Files), or in the "On My iPhone → PPSSPP" local folder. Files in Downloads or a third-party app folder may not appear.
  • After moving files, force-close PPSSPP (swipe up from App Switcher) and reopen it — the file list refreshes on launch.

Audio stutters or cuts out

  • Go to Settings → Audio → Audio latency: Medium. High latency prevents CPU audio underruns on older iPhones; Low latency can introduce stutter if the device can't keep up.
  • Confirm the silent/ringer switch on the side of your iPhone is not muted — PPSSPP audio respects the hardware mute switch.

Transfer saves from PPSSPP Android or PC

  1. On Android/PC: locate the PPSSPP save folder — typically PSP/SAVEDATA/. Copy the game-specific folder (e.g., ULUS10547SAVE00) to your Mac/PC.
  2. On your iPhone: open Files → iCloud Drive → PPSSPP → PSP → SAVEDATA and paste the folder there.
  3. Reopen PPSSPP on iOS — the save should appear in the game's Continue screen.

App crashes on launch

  • Ensure iOS is up to date. PPSSPP on iOS is actively maintained; older iOS versions occasionally have compatibility issues.
  • Delete and reinstall PPSSPP from the App Store if crashes persist — this resets corrupted settings without deleting your saves (saves are in iCloud Drive, outside the app sandbox).
