PPSSPP iOS — How to Play PSP Games on iPhone or iPad (2026)

Install PPSSPP from the App Store

Open the App Store and search for PPSSPP. The developer is Henrik Rydgård. Tap Get to install — it is free with no in-app purchases. The gold-badge paid version (PPSSPP Gold) is identical in features; Gold is a donation tier, not an upgrade.

PPSSPP does not require a PSP firmware file. It uses high-level emulation (HLE) and boots nearly all PSP titles without any BIOS or firmware. Compatibility is very high across the PSP library.

Get PSP game files (legal path)

PSP game images must come from your own UMD discs. Dumping with a CFW PSP using the Prometheus ISO Dumper (or ppsspp.org's own guide) is the legally clearest path. Supported file formats:

• .iso — standard UMD disc image (most common)
• .cso — compressed ISO, smaller file size, same compatibility
• .pbp — PSP Minis and some PSN titles

Transfer game files to iPhone

Choose one of these methods:

• iCloud Drive: upload the .iso/.cso to iCloud Drive on a Mac or PC; access from the Files app on iPhone.
• AirDrop: AirDrop the file from a Mac directly to the Files app.
• Dropbox / Google Drive: upload to cloud storage; open from the Files app.
• USB via Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows): connect iPhone, select PPSSPP under File Sharing, drag the game file in.

Open a game in PPSSPP

1. Open PPSSPP on your iPhone.
2. Tap Games at the bottom of the screen.
3. Tap the folder icon in the top-right and select Add Folder.
4. Navigate to where your game file is (Files app, iCloud Drive, etc.) and select the folder containing it.
5. PPSSPP will scan the folder and add the game to your library. Tap the game icon to launch it.

Most iPhones from the iPhone 11 (A13) onward run PSP games at full speed with default settings. Older devices may need tuning.

Go to Settings → Graphics inside PPSSPP

• Rendering resolution: set to 1× PSP (480×272 native) on older devices (iPhone X / A11 or earlier). On iPhone 13 and newer, 4× or higher gives a sharper image with no slowdown.
• Backend: keep at Vulkan (default on iOS 15+). Vulkan uses Metal underneath on iOS and is the fastest option. Switch to OpenGL only if you see graphical corruption.
• Frame skipping: leave at Off. Enable only if the game cannot reach 60 fps even at 1×.
• Texture scaling: keep at Off on iPhone 11 and older to preserve performance.

CPU / Emulation settings

• Fast memory (unstable): keep on (default). Only disable if a specific game crashes.
• Dynarec (JIT): must remain on. This is the core speed lever; disabling it drops performance to unusable.
• IO timing: leave at Fast. Games that require UMD disc-speed simulation (a rare edge case) may need Simulate UMD speed.

PPSSPP on iOS supports the same Bluetooth controllers as the rest of the iOS ecosystem.

Pair a controller (before opening PPSSPP)

• Xbox Series X/S: hold the pairing button on top of the controller until the Xbox logo blinks rapidly. In iOS Settings → Bluetooth, select Xbox Wireless Controller.
• PS5 DualSense: hold Create + PS button until the light bar pulses. Select DualSense Wireless Controller.
• PS4 DualShock 4: hold Share + PS button. Select DUALSHOCK 4.
• MFi controllers (Backbone One, Razer Kishi V2): connect via USB-C or Lightning — detected instantly.

After pairing, open PPSSPP and launch a game. Button mapping defaults to the PSP layout automatically. To remap: Settings → Controls → Control Mapping. Tap the PSP button you want to change and press the physical button to assign it.

On-screen controls

The default on-screen overlay matches the PSP's face buttons, d-pad, and analog stick. To resize or reposition: while in a game, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner → Edit layout.

PSP save data in PPSSPP is stored in the app's private storage, which means it is NOT automatically synced to iCloud like App Store data usually is. Back up manually to avoid losing progress.

Where saves are stored

PPSSPP saves are in two locations:

• Save states: PSP/SAVESTATE/ folder inside PPSSPP's documents directory.
• Game saves (in-game save data): PSP/SAVEDATA/ folder. This is the PSP's native save format — compatible with other PPSSPP installs on any platform.

Back up via USB / Finder

1. Connect iPhone to a Mac with a USB cable. Open Finder.
2. Select your iPhone → Files tab → scroll to PPSSPP.
3. Drag the PSP folder to your Mac desktop. This copies all saves and save states.

Back up via Files app

Navigate to PPSSPP's document folder in the Files app (On My iPhone → PPSSPP → PSP). Long-press the SAVEDATA folder → Compress → Share → save to iCloud Drive or email to yourself.

Restore after reinstall

To restore, copy the PSP/SAVEDATA/ content back into PPSSPP's document folder via Finder or the Files app before launching the game. Saves will load from the restored files.
