How to Enable RetroAchievements in RetroArch — Trophy Hunting for Classic Games 2026
I want to earn achievements and track mastery in my classic games using RetroAchievements, but I don't know how to connect RetroArch to my account or why my achievements aren't unlocking even when I complete the required tasks.
Solutions
Solution 1
What RetroAchievements is: RetroAchievements (retroachievements.org) is a free service that adds trophy-style achievements to classic console games — NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, PS1, N64, Sega Genesis, and more. RetroArch has built-in RetroAchievements support; you just need a free account and to enable the feature.
Step 1 — Create a Free Account:
- Go to retroachievements.org and click Create Account.
- Choose a username and password. This same login goes into RetroArch — keep it simple (no special characters in the password, as RetroArch's text input can mangle them).
- Confirm your email and log in to your new profile. You'll see your point total (starts at 0) and achievement history here.
Step 2 — Enable RetroAchievements in RetroArch:
- Open RetroArch and go to Settings → Achievements.
- Turn Enable RetroAchievements to ON.
- Enter your RetroAchievements Username and Password in the fields below.
- Leave Test Unofficial Achievements OFF unless you're a developer testing a set in progress.
- Choose your mode (see S2 for the difference between hardcore and softcore).
Step 3 — Launch a Supported Game:
- Load a game using a supported core. When the game starts, RetroArch connects to the RA server and downloads the achievement set for that game.
- You'll see a brief "You have X achievements to earn" banner in the top corner if the game is supported. If nothing appears, the game has no achievement set yet — check retroachievements.org to confirm.
- Complete an achievement condition in-game (e.g., defeat a boss, collect an item). A popup "Achievement Unlocked — [Name]" appears on screen and the point total updates on your RA profile.
Viewing your progress: While in-game, press F1 (PC keyboard) or your RetroArch menu button to open the Quick Menu → Achievements. This shows all achievements for the current game, which ones you've earned, and their point values.
Solution 2
RetroAchievements has two modes. Choose based on how seriously you want to compete:
Softcore Mode (default — recommended for beginners):
- Save states, rewind, and fast-forward are allowed.
- Achievements unlock and appear on your profile.
- Points count toward your overall score.
- NOT eligible for leaderboard entries (speed runs, challenge scores).
- Best for casual play, learning a game's achievement set, or accessibility runs.
Hardcore Mode (competitive):
- Save states, rewind, fast-forward, and cheat codes are disabled by RetroArch automatically.
- Achievements show a gold trophy icon on your profile instead of silver — indicating the game was completed under challenge conditions.
- Leaderboard entries (times, scores) are only accepted in hardcore mode.
- Enable in Settings → Achievements → Hardcore Mode → ON. RetroArch will warn you that save states are disabled before starting.
To enable Hardcore Mode:
- Go to Settings → Achievements.
- Turn Hardcore Mode to ON.
- Restart the current game if one is loaded. Hardcore mode takes effect on the next game launch.
You can toggle back to softcore at any time — achievements already earned in hardcore keep their gold status.
Solution 3
Not every core works with RetroAchievements. RA requires specific "approved" cores that expose the correct memory map for achievement tracking. Using an unsupported core causes achievements to silently fail.
Best supported cores by system:
- NES: Nestopia UE, FCEUmm
- SNES: Snes9x (Current)
- Game Boy / GBC: Gambatte, SameBoy
- Game Boy Advance: mGBA — most complete RA support, always prefer mGBA for GBA achievements
- Nintendo DS: melonDS DS
- Nintendo 64: Mupen64Plus-Next
- PlayStation 1: Beetle PSX HW or Beetle PSX (NOT PCSX ReARMed for achievements — limited support)
- Sega Genesis / Mega Drive: Genesis Plus GX
- Sega Saturn: Beetle Saturn (experimental, smaller achievement library)
- Atari 2600: Stella 2014 or Stella
Finding games with achievement sets:
- Go to retroachievements.org → Games and browse by console.
- Or search a specific game title — the page shows how many achievements it has, total points, and how many players have earned them.
- Games with large sets (50+ achievements) and high player counts are well-maintained and worth playing for achievements.
- Games marked [Subset] have bonus challenge sets (e.g., "Bonus" or "Professor" difficulty) in addition to the main set.
Solution 4
Achievement unlocked in-game but didn't save to my profile:
- RetroArch requires an active internet connection to submit unlocks in real time. If you play offline, open the Quick Menu → Achievements and look for an Upload Missing Unlocks option — RetroArch queues offline unlocks and syncs them when a connection is detected.
No achievement banner appears when I start the game:
- The ROM's hash doesn't match any entry in the RA database. Try a different dump of the same game. RA is strict about ROM versions — use No-Intro or Redump sets, not patched or overdumped ROMs.
- The game simply has no achievement set yet. Check retroachievements.org — if the game page shows 0 achievements, it's not supported.
- You're using an unsupported core. Switch to the recommended core listed in S3 above.
I completed the achievement condition but it didn't unlock:
- Some achievements require specific conditions that must be met without using a save state loaded in the same session. Start the game fresh and replay from a real in-game save.
- In Hardcore Mode — save states are disabled, but if RetroArch detects a state was loaded earlier in the session, it may suspend achievement tracking. Restart the game fully.
- The achievement logic may have a known bug. Check the achievement's comments on retroachievements.org — the developer may have a fix or note about edge cases.
RetroArch says "Failed to login" or achievements don't load:
- Go to Settings → Achievements and re-enter your username and password. Special characters in passwords can get garbled by RetroArch's on-screen keyboard — use alphanumeric passwords only for best compatibility.
- If you changed your RA password recently, update it in RetroArch too.
