RetroArch cheat codes not working or showing no effect
Medium
You've entered or loaded cheat codes in RetroArch but they have no effect, the cheat menu is empty, or the option to enable cheats is greyed out. RetroArch's cheat system lives inside the Quick Menu (not the main menu) and requires the core to support it — missing either step is the most common reason cheats silently fail.
## Solution 1: enable-cheats-quick-menu-retroarch
### solutionTitle
Open Quick Menu > Cheats and activate individual codes
### isMostHelpful: true
### body
1. Start your game and press **F1** (keyboard) or your hotkey for Quick Menu.
2. Go to **Cheats**.
3. Toggle **Load Cheat File (Replace)** or **Add New Code (Live)** — select your cheat file or add a code manually.
4. Scroll to each cheat entry and set it to **Enabled: Yes**.
5. Select **Apply Changes** at the bottom of the list (without this step codes load but do nothing).
6. Return to the game; cheats take effect immediately for most systems.
Tip: RetroArch also auto-loads a `.cht` file if one exists in the `cheats//.cht` path — check whether your core folder already has cheat files bundled.
## Solution 2: load-cheat-file-from-directory
### solutionTitle
Download and load a .cht cheat file for your game
### isMostHelpful: false
### body
RetroArch ships with cheat databases you can download via Online Updater.
1. Main Menu → **Online Updater → Update Cheats** — downloads `.cht` files for all supported systems into `retroarch/cheats/`.
2. Start your game, open Quick Menu → **Cheats → Load Cheat File (Replace)**.
3. Navigate to the cheat folder for your core (e.g. `cheats/Genesis Plus GX/`), find your game's `.cht` file.
4. After loading, enable each desired cheat line and press **Apply Changes**.
If your game isn't found, search [GameHacking.org](https://gamehacking.org) for raw codes and use Solution 3 (manual entry) instead.
## Solution 3: add-cheat-code-manually-live
### solutionTitle
Enter a cheat code manually with Add New Code (Live)
### isMostHelpful: false
### body
RetroArch accepts Game Genie and Pro Action Replay (PAR) codes you enter yourself.
1. Quick Menu → **Cheats → Add New Code (Live)**.
2. Set **Code** to the raw hex string (e.g. `0100D8C1` for a PAR code).
3. Set **Type** to match the code format — **Game Genie**, **Game Genie 2**, or **Pro Action Replay** depending on the system.
4. Give it a descriptive **Description** (e.g. "Infinite Lives").
5. Set **Enabled: Yes**, then **Apply Changes**.
6. Save the cheat file (**Save Cheat File**) so it reloads automatically next session.
Note: Game Genie codes use letter strings; PAR/Action Replay codes use hex. Mixing the two types causes wrong values — always check the source site for which format is used.
## Solution 4: core-does-not-support-cheats-check
### solutionTitle
Verify your core supports cheats — not all cores do
### isMostHelpful: false
### body
Cheat support depends on the individual core, not RetroArch itself. Cores that commonly lack cheat support:
- **MAME cores** — use MAME's own cheat.7z system, not RetroArch cheats.
- **ScummVM** — no cheat system (adventure games don't use memory codes).
- **Beetle Saturn** — cheat support is limited; use standalone Mednafen instead.
- **PPSSPP core** — use standalone PPSSPP's CWCheat system (seed #150) for reliable cheat handling.
For PlayStation 1 cheats: prefer the **DuckStation core** or standalone DuckStation (seed #151), which has the most complete cheat database. For GBA, **mGBA** core has excellent built-in cheat support (GameShark / CodeBreaker / Action Replay v1–v3).
If cheats are important for your session, check the libretro core documentation page to confirm cheat support before troubleshooting further.
