RetroArch games look flat or too sharp — how to enable CRT shaders and visual presets

Medium
RetroArch running retro games at upscaled resolution looks unnaturally sharp — the crisp pixel grid doesn't match how these games were designed to be seen on a CRT TV. Shader presets fix this: they add scanlines, phosphor glow, color correction, or full CRT bezel effects. Alternatively, HD upscaling shaders (xBR, ScaleFX) smooth pixels without the CRT look. RetroArch supports all of these through its shader system. ## Solution 1: retroarch-download-shaders-online-updater ### solutionTitle Download shader packs via Online Updater (required first step) ### isMostHelpful: true ### body RetroArch does not ship with shader packs by default — download them first via the built-in updater. 1. Open RetroArch main menu → **Online Updater**. 2. Select **Update Slang Shaders** if your video driver is **Vulkan** (recommended) or **Direct3D 12/11**. Select **Update GLSL Shaders** if your driver is **OpenGL**. 3. Wait for the download to complete (several MB — may take a minute on slow connections). 4. Shaders are now saved in RetroArch's shader directory (usually `RetroArch/shaders/`). **Which shader type to use:** - **Vulkan / D3D11/12 → Slang** (`.slangp` presets) — more effects, better performance - **OpenGL → GLSL** (`.glslp` presets) — legacy, still works - Software driver: does not support shaders at all — switch to a hardware driver first **After downloading:** launch a game and open Quick Menu (F1 or your hotkey) to load a shader preset. ## Solution 2: retroarch-load-crt-shader-preset ### solutionTitle Load a CRT scanline shader preset in Quick Menu ### isMostHelpful: false ### body Apply a CRT shader to a running game: 1. Launch a game, then press **F1** (or your Quick Menu hotkey) to open Quick Menu. 2. Navigate to **Shaders → Load Shader Preset**. 3. Browse to the **shaders/crt/** folder. 4. **Recommended CRT presets:** - `crt-royale.slangp` — most accurate phosphor simulation; beautiful but GPU-intensive - `crt-geom.slangp` — curved CRT geometry effect; lighter than Royale - `crt-hyllian.slangp` — sharp scanlines without geometry; great balance of quality/performance - `zfast-crt.slangp` — very lightweight, suitable for low-end hardware 5. Select a preset and press Enter — the shader applies immediately. 6. Back in the Shaders menu, select **Save Game Preset** to apply this shader automatically whenever this game loads, or **Save Core Preset** to apply it to all games run by this core. **Performance note:** CRT-Royale is GPU-heavy at high resolutions. If frame rate drops, try `zfast-crt` or disable shaders on underpowered hardware. ## Solution 3: retroarch-mega-bezel-shader-setup ### solutionTitle Set up Mega Bezel — full CRT monitor with bezel effect ### isMostHelpful: false ### body Mega Bezel is a community-developed shader that replicates a full CRT monitor inside a decorative bezel on your screen — popular for arcade and console aesthetics. **Install Mega Bezel (separate download — not in the standard shader pack):** 1. Visit the Mega Bezel Reflection Shader project page (search "Mega Bezel Reflection Shader" on GitHub — HSM-Mega-Bezel-Reflection-Shader). 2. Download the latest release ZIP and extract it into your RetroArch `shaders/` folder. 3. You should now have a `shaders/Mega_Bezel/` directory. **Load a Mega Bezel preset:** 1. In-game, Quick Menu → **Shaders → Load Shader Preset**. 2. Navigate to `Mega_Bezel/Presets/`. Choose a tier: - **MBZ__1__ADV** — highest quality, most GPU intensive - **MBZ__2__STD** — standard quality, good balance (start here) - **MBZ__3__STD-SUPER-XBR** — standard + HD upscaling - **MBZ__4__STD-HD** — HD without CRT (modern look) 3. Inside each tier, choose a resolution folder matching your display (1080p, 1440p, 4K). 4. Load the preset — the game should now display inside a CRT monitor frame. **GPU requirement:** Mega Bezel at full quality is demanding. On mid-range hardware use STD tier; on low-end use the POTATO presets in the folder. ## Solution 4: retroarch-hd-upscaling-shaders-no-crt ### solutionTitle HD upscaling shaders for a clean modern look without CRT effects ### isMostHelpful: false ### body If you prefer crisp pixel art upscaling without scanlines or CRT effects, RetroArch includes several HD upscaling algorithms. **From Quick Menu → Shaders → Load Shader Preset, browse to:** **Pixel-art upscaling (smooth edges):** - `shaders/scalefx/` — ScaleFX: high-quality pixel-art upscaling with smooth curves - `shaders/xbr/` — xBR/xBRZ: popular algorithm, rounds pixel corners smoothly - `shaders/hqx/` — HQx: classic (2x/3x/4x), softer look **Integer scaling (sharp pixels, no blur):** - `shaders/interpolation/sharp-bilinear.slangp` — sharpest upscale with no pixel bleed - In Quick Menu → Shaders → Shader Parameters, set **Scale** to match your display ratio **Combination approach:** Many users combine an upscaling pass with a subtle scanline pass: 1. Load an xBR or ScaleFX preset first. 2. In the Shaders menu, select **Append Shader Pass** and add a light scanline shader from `shaders/scanlines/` (e.g., `scanlines-sine-abs.slangp`). 3. Save as a custom preset: **Save Game/Core Preset**. This gives the sharp upscaled pixels of the HD shader with just enough scanline overlay to soften the raw pixel grid — without the full CRT simulation.
