I just got a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and want to know which emulators to install, where to put BIOS files, and how to set it up for PS1, PS2, PSP, GBA, GameCube, and Switch games. The device runs Android — where do I start?

Install standalone emulators — better performance than RetroArch cores for demanding systems

The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro runs Android 13 with a Snapdragon 865 processor and 8 GB RAM. Install these from the Play Store or via APK for best performance per system:

  • PS1: DuckStation (Play Store, free) — Vulkan renderer, PGXP geometry correction, 2×–4× resolution. Runs 100% of games at full speed.
  • PS2: NetherSX2 (APK sideload from GitHub — AetherSX2 maintained fork) — Vulkan backend, 1× internal res for demanding 3D, 2× for lighter titles. Most games run at full speed or close to it.
  • PSP: PPSSPP (Play Store, free) — Vulkan backend, 2× resolution. Full speed on virtually all PSP games.
  • GBA / GBC / GB: RetroArch with mGBA core, or standalone mGBA APK from mgba.io — perfect compatibility.
  • Nintendo DS: DraStic (Play Store, $4.99) or melonDS APK — DraStic is tuned for Android performance.

Set up Daijishō as a game-library front-end

Daijishō is a free Android launcher that shows your ROM library with boxart in a console-style grid. It launches the correct emulator automatically when you select a game.

  1. Install Daijishō from the Play Store.
  2. Open Daijishō → tap the + button → New platform.
  3. Choose a platform (e.g., PlayStation 2), point it to your ROM folder on the microSD, and set the player app to NetherSX2.
  4. Repeat for each platform: PSP → PPSSPP, GameCube → Dolphin, GBA → mGBA, etc.
  5. Tap Sync library — Daijishō auto-downloads boxart from SteamGridDB and other databases.
  6. Optional: in Android Settings → Default apps → Home app, set Daijishō as the launcher so the RP4 Pro boots straight into your game library.

Alternative: The Retroid Pocket's built-in Game Manager launcher works similarly with less configuration required and is pre-installed.

BIOS file placement for systems that require it

Dump BIOS files from your own hardware. Place them in the paths below on the RP4 Pro:

  • PS1 (DuckStation): Open DuckStation → Settings → BIOS → set the BIOS directory to a folder containing scph5501.bin or another SCPH model. BIOS is optional (HLE boots most games) but improves compatibility for a handful of titles.
  • PS2 (NetherSX2): On first launch, NetherSX2 prompts for a BIOS folder. Place a PS2 BIOS file (e.g., BIOS-EU-v02.00.bin, typically ~4 MB) in any folder and point NetherSX2 to it. PS2 BIOS is required.
  • Nintendo DS (melonDS): Place bios7.bin, bios9.bin, and firmware.bin in melonDS's BIOS directory. Go to Settings → BIOS/Firmware to set the path. Required for many NDS games.
  • Sega Saturn (RetroArch Beetle Saturn core): Place sega_101.bin (Japan) or mpr-17933.bin (US/EU) in /sdcard/RetroArch/system/. Saturn BIOS is required to boot games.
  • Dreamcast (Flycast): Optional for most games. If needed, place dc_boot.bin and dc_flash.bin in the Flycast data/dc/ folder.

Transfer ROMs to the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro

USB file transfer (fastest for large libraries):

  1. Connect the RP4 Pro to your PC via USB-C.
  2. Swipe down the Android notification shade → tap USB → File Transfer (MTP).
  3. On your PC, open File Explorer — the device appears as a drive. Navigate to the microSD card partition.
  4. Copy your ROM folders (e.g., ROMs/PS2/, ROMs/PSP/, ROMs/GBA/) to the microSD.

microSD card swap (best for first-time bulk setup):

  1. Power off the RP4 Pro and remove the microSD card.
  2. Insert the card into a USB card reader on your PC.
  3. Copy all ROM folders to the card, then re-insert it into the device.
  4. The card should be formatted exFAT (the Android default for large microSDs). Do not reformat to FAT32 if it is already exFAT — FAT32 has a 4 GB per-file limit that breaks large ROM images.
