RPCS3 Online Play Setup — RPCN Network, PSN Games, Multiplayer 2026

Medium4 solutions

I want to play PS3 games online in RPCS3 — games like Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 2, or any PS3 title that had online multiplayer. How do I set up RPCS3 for online play using RPCN, create an account, and fix connection errors?

RPCS3 uses RPCN (RPCS3 Custom Network), an open-source unofficial replacement for Sony's PS3 PSN servers. RPCN is free, maintained by the RPCS3 team, and supports a growing list of online PS3 games. Sony officially shut down PS3 PSN in January 2024; RPCN is the only path to PS3 online play.

Step 1 — Create an RPCN account:

  1. In RPCS3: Configuration → Network.
  2. Under PSN Status set it to RPCN.
  3. Click Manage RPCNCreate Account.
  4. Enter a username, password, and an email address. RPCN sends a verification token to your email.
  5. Check your email for a message from the RPCN server (check spam). Copy the 8-character verification token and paste it into the RPCS3 RPCN prompt.
  6. Your account is now active. RPCS3 will remember your credentials and log in automatically each session.

Step 2 — Set the correct DNS:

  • In Configuration → Network, set DNS to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google). This ensures the game can reach RPCN's servers. Leave the other network fields at their defaults.
  • PSN Status should now show RPCN. Never set it to "Simulated" (offline fake mode) or "Live" (the old live PSN that no longer works) for actual online play.

Step 3 — Enable network in the game:

  • Start your game normally. Navigate to its online/multiplayer menu. The game will attempt to connect using your RPCN credentials.
  • The first time, the game may prompt for a PSN sign-in — use your RPCN username and password.
  • Not all PS3 online features work yet. Check the RPCS3 compatibility list and look for "RPCN" in the notes column for your game.

games-that-work-with-rpcn (sortOrder=2)

Games confirmed working with RPCN (as of 2026):

  • Demon's Souls — invasions, co-op (Soul Sign), and summoning all work via RPCN. This is one of the best-supported games.
  • Warhawk — large-scale multiplayer confirmed; popular on RPCN due to no PC version.
  • Killzone 2 / 3 — lobby and matchmaking functional.
  • Resistance: Fall of Man / 2 / 3 — co-op and multiplayer work.
  • LittleBigPlanet 1 / 2 — online level sharing and co-op supported via a dedicated community-run server alongside RPCN.
  • MotorStorm (original and Pacific Rift) — racing lobbies work.
  • Dark Souls 2 (PS3) — co-op summon signs and PvP invasions work.

Games with partial RPCN support:

  • Games that relied on dedicated Sony-operated game servers (the actual match servers, not just PSN auth) may show online menus but fail to find matches. The RPCN auth layer works; the game server layer is game-specific.
  • Games like GTA V and Call of Duty (PS3) rely on Rockstar/Activision servers that are also shut down — RPCN can't revive game-side servers, only the PSN login layer.

Check before playing: visit the RPCS3 wiki, search your game, and look for RPCN compatibility notes. The community updates these regularly.

"Cannot connect to RPCN server" on startup:

  • Check that DNS in RPCS3 network settings is set to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.
  • Verify your internet connection is working outside RPCS3.
  • RPCN servers occasionally have brief downtime. Wait a few minutes and retry. You can check RPCN server status on the RPCS3 Discord.
  • Firewall: make sure RPCS3.exe is allowed outbound on TCP/UDP. Windows Defender may block it on first run.

"Verification token not received" during account creation:

  • Check your spam/junk folder — RPCN's email comes from a non-commercial server and is frequently filtered.
  • If no email arrives after 10 minutes, try a different email provider (Gmail tends to work reliably; corporate/university email often blocks it).
  • You can also try a temporary email address service for the initial verification.

Game can't find online sessions / lobby is empty:

  • The game works with RPCN for authentication but the player base is small — for less popular games, lobbies may genuinely be empty. Post in the RPCS3 Discord or a game-specific subreddit to coordinate sessions with other RPCS3 players.
  • Demon's Souls and LittleBigPlanet have the most active RPCN player bases.

RPCN auth passes but game disconnects mid-session:

  • Check your UPnP settings: RPCS3 network settings → enable Enable UPnP if available, which helps with NAT traversal for peer-to-peer connections.
  • Packet loss / high ping: RPCN does not have regional relays — all connections route through the main server. Players geographically far from the RPCN server may see higher latency.

rpcn-vs-offline-modes-explained (sortOrder=4)

RPCS3's PSN Status setting has three options — knowing which to use matters:

PSN StatusWhat it doesWhen to use
DisabledNo network emulation at allSingle-player games with no PSN features
SimulatedFake offline PSN (no real server)Games that check PSN at startup but don't actually need online features — fools the check without connecting
RPCNConnects to RPCN servers for real online playAny game you want to use online, co-op, or multiplayer with

Important: Some games crash or refuse to start with PSN Status set to "Disabled" because they require a PSN check at launch. Setting it to "Simulated" fixes this for single-player games without needing an RPCN account. Only use "RPCN" when you actually want online features — it adds a small startup delay as RPCS3 logs into the RPCN server.

Trophies with RPCN: RPCN supports PS3 trophy unlock and sync — trophies you earn in RPCS3 with RPCN enabled are stored in a local trophy database. They are NOT synced to any Sony servers (those are shut down), but they're tracked locally for your record.
