How to Set Up ScummVM and Play Classic Adventure Games — Complete Guide 2026

Low4 solutions

I want to play classic PC adventure games — Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, King's Quest, Space Quest, Grim Fandango — on my modern computer. How do I set up ScummVM, add my game files, configure graphics filters and audio, and get them running smoothly on Windows, Android, or Steam Deck?

What ScummVM Does

ScummVM is not a typical emulator. Instead of emulating old hardware, it reimplements the original game engines from scratch. This means games run faster and more accurately than in DOSBox, with quality-of-life features like improved graphics filters, save-anywhere, and modern controller support. If you have the original game files (from GOG, CD, or floppy), ScummVM can run them perfectly.

Supported Games (600+ titles)

ScummVM started with LucasArts SCUMM-engine games (the name is an acronym) but now covers hundreds of classic adventures:

  • LucasArts: Monkey Island series, Day of the Tentacle, Maniac Mansion, Sam & Max, Full Throttle, The Dig, Grim Fandango, Indiana Jones (and the Last Crusade / Fate of Atlantis)
  • Sierra On-Line: King's Quest series, Space Quest series, Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Gabriel Knight, Quest for Glory
  • Other studios: Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 & 2, Simon the Sorcerer, Humongous Entertainment (Freddi Fish, Putt-Putt, Pajama Sam), Kyrandia series, Lure of the Temptress

Check the full list at scummvm.org/compatibility before hunting for game files.

Step 1 — Download ScummVM

Go to scummvm.org → Downloads and get the current stable release:

  • Windows: .exe installer (64-bit recommended) or download via Steam (free, makes updating easy)
  • macOS: .dmg Universal binary — works on Intel and Apple Silicon
  • Linux: AppImage, sudo apt install scummvm, or flatpak install org.scummvm.ScummVM
  • Android: Google Play Store or F-Droid
  • iOS: App Store

Step 2 — Get Game Files

ScummVM needs the original game data files. Sources:

  • GOG.com (recommended): most supported games are available cheaply or free. GOG bundles DOSBox, but ScummVM runs the same games better. Install the GOG game, then find its game data folder (C:\GOG Games\[Game Name]\).
  • Your original CDs or floppies: copy the game files to a folder on your PC (e.g., C:\ScummVM-Games\Monkey-Island\).
  • Freeware games (no purchase needed): see Step 4 — several supported games are released as freeware by their publishers.

Step 3 — Add a Game to ScummVM

  1. Open ScummVM
  2. Click Add Game
  3. Browse to the game's data folder (the folder containing the game's data files, e.g., MONKEY.000 and MONKEY.001 for Monkey Island)
  4. ScummVM auto-detects the game and fills in the game name and engine
  5. Click OK
  6. Select the game in the list and click Start

Tip — Add Multiple Games at Once: Click Mass Add, browse to a parent folder containing multiple game subfolders, and ScummVM scans everything automatically.

Save Anywhere: In ScummVM, press F5 in-game to open the save/load menu. You can save and restore at any point — no more hunting for save points.

Graphics Filters

These games were designed for low-resolution monitors. ScummVM offers filters to upscale them:

  • Normal (no filter): crisp original pixels, scaled up nearest-neighbor. Best for pixel-art purists.
  • 2×, 3× (Scale2×, Scale3×): doubles or triples resolution with smooth scaling. Good general-purpose choice.
  • HQ2×, HQ3×: high-quality upscale that smooths curves and diagonals. Looks more polished but less "retro."
  • xBR: edge-based upscaling that intelligently smooths sprites. Good for background art.

To change: Global Options → Graphics → Render Mode and Graphics Mode. The OpenGL renderer with Nearest Neighbor scaling is the simplest sharp-pixel option on modern monitors.

Fullscreen and Window Mode

Toggle fullscreen with Alt+Enter in-game, or set it in Global Options → Graphics → Fullscreen. ScummVM scales to any resolution while maintaining the original aspect ratio.

Audio and MIDI Music

ScummVM handles music natively without the Sound Blaster setup required by DOSBox. To configure:

  • Default (FluidSynth / MIDI): ScummVM includes FluidSynth with a built-in soundfont for MIDI music. Works out of the box.
  • Better MIDI quality: in Global Options → Audio → Music Driver, select FluidSynth and optionally point it to a higher-quality soundfont (.sf2 file) for richer music.
  • Original AdLib sound: for games that sound best with OPL FM synthesis (most 1990s LucasArts games), select AdLib Emulation — this reproduces the authentic "DOS sound card" experience.

Subtitle and Language Options

Many ScummVM games support subtitles independently of voice audio. In-game, press T to cycle through text mode options (speech only / both / text only). Useful for multi-language game files.

Playing on Android

ScummVM on Android is excellent — the touch interface was designed with these point-and-click games in mind.

  1. Install ScummVM from the Play Store
  2. Copy your game data files to a folder on your device (e.g., /sdcard/ScummVM-Games/)
  3. Open ScummVM on Android → Add Game → navigate to the game folder
  4. Touch controls map well: tap = left click, tap-and-hold = right click

For physical controller on Android: ScummVM supports Bluetooth gamepads. D-pad moves the cursor; A = left click; B = right click.

Playing on Steam Deck

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode on the Steam Deck
  2. Open Discover (the software store) and install ScummVM (Flatpak)
  3. Or add the Steam version (free, better for Game Mode integration)
  4. In Game Mode, ScummVM works with the touchpad (left pad = cursor, R1 = left click, L1 = right click)

Free Freeware Games (No Purchase Required)

Several publishers have released their classic games as freeware. Download directly from ScummVM's extras page:

  • Beneath a Steel Sky (Revolution Software — free on GOG)
  • Lure of the Temptress (Revolution Software — free on GOG)
  • Flight of the Amazon Queen (free from the developers)
  • Drascula: The Vampire Strikes Back (free from the developer)
  • Soltys, Sfinx, The Griffon Legend — freeware from their developers

ScummVM's Downloads page → Freeware Games has links to all officially free titles. Beneath a Steel Sky is the standout freeware recommendation — cyberpunk adventure, high production values, fully voiced.

common-issues-and-troubleshooting (sortOrder=4)

Performance Tips

  • ScummVM is extremely lightweight — any modern PC, phone, or tablet runs all supported games at full speed. No performance tuning needed.
  • For oldest 256-color EGA games (King's Quest 1/2/3, Space Quest 1/2), try Render Mode: EGA in game options for authentic palette.
  • GOG's bundled DOSBox versions of LucasArts games don't support save-anywhere — switch to ScummVM for the same game and get that feature for free.

Common Issues

  • "Game not found" when adding a folder: ScummVM can't identify the files. Make sure you're pointing to the folder that contains the game's main data files, not a parent folder or a setup folder. For GOG games, the data is usually in a subfolder inside C:\GOG Games\[Game]\.
  • No speech audio in supported games: some LucasArts games have a separate speech/audio pack (e.g., the CD talkie version of Monkey Island). You need the talkie version of the game files, not the floppy version. GOG's versions include speech.
  • Music sounds wrong or uses PC beeper: go to game-specific Options → Audio → Music Driver and switch to AdLib Emulation or FluidSynth.
  • Game runs but has graphical glitches: try changing the Graphics Mode in options (e.g., switch from Normal to OpenGL). Some older engines have known rendering quirks under specific modes.
  • Android: can't find game files: on Android 11+, ScummVM may need storage permissions. Grant ScummVM full storage access in Android Settings → Apps → ScummVM → Permissions.
  • My game isn't in the compatibility list: if a title isn't on scummvm.org/compatibility, ScummVM doesn't support it. Use DOSBox-X for those games (DOSBox-X setup guide).
  • Save files location: ScummVM saves are at %APPDATA%\ScummVM\Saves\ on Windows, ~/.local/share/scummvm/saves/ on Linux. Copy them to back up your progress.
