How to Set Up shadPS4 — Complete PS4 Emulator Guide 2026
I want to set up shadPS4 to play PlayStation 4 games on my PC. I downloaded it but I'm getting firmware errors and my games won't boot. I'm not sure how to install the PS4 firmware, configure Vulkan, or get controllers working.
Solutions
Solution 1
PS4 emulation in 2026: shadPS4 is the only active open-source PS4 emulator that runs commercial titles. As of 2026 it boots Bloodborne, Persona 5 Royal, The Last of Us Part I, and hundreds of other titles — compatibility is growing fast. It requires Vulkan 1.3 (DirectX is not supported), and PS4 firmware must be installed to load most commercial games.
Minimum hardware requirements:
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 / AMD RX 580 or better (Vulkan 1.3 mandatory — Intel integrated graphics are not supported)
- CPU: 8-core, 3.5 GHz+ recommended
- RAM: 16 GB (32 GB recommended)
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit minimum; Windows 11 recommended
- Storage: SSD strongly recommended — PS4 games are 25–50 GB each; shader cache I/O causes visible stuttering on HDDs
Step 1 — Download shadPS4 safely:
The only safe source is shadps4.net or the official GitHub at github.com/shadps4-emu/shadPS4.
⚠ Fake mirrors exist. Third-party sites bundle malware or outdated builds. Never use YouTube description links or random file-sharing sites.
- Go to shadps4.net → Download latest Windows 64-bit build (zip file).
- Extract to a permanent folder — e.g.
C:\Emulators\shadPS4\. - Do NOT place in
C:\Program Files\— UAC blocks write access for settings and caches.
shadPS4 is fully portable. To update: download the new release, extract into the same folder, overwrite the executable. Settings and caches survive in sub-folders.
Step 2 — Install PS4 firmware (mandatory for commercial games):
shadPS4 loads real PS4 firmware modules (libSceKernel, libSceGnmDriver, libSceAudioOut, etc.). Unlike PCSX2 or Dolphin which use HLE to emulate system calls, shadPS4 requires the real libraries — without them, every commercial title fails at boot with "module not found."
The only legal source is your own PS4. You must dump PS4UPDATE.PUP from a PS4 you own (shadPS4.net links to the extraction procedure for jailbroken PS4 on firmware 9.00 or 11.00).
- Open shadPS4 (the .exe you extracted).
- Go to Settings → System → Firmware → Install Firmware.
- Browse to your
PS4UPDATE.PUPfile. - shadPS4 extracts required modules to its
sys/sub-folder (1–3 minutes). - After completion, the firmware version appears in Settings → System.
Step 3 — Load games:
PS4 games do not come in a single ISO like PS2 or GameCube. shadPS4 supports:
- Extracted game folder (recommended): games dumped from your own PS4 via jailbreak FTP access produce a folder structure shadPS4 reads natively.
- PKG files with work.bin (NoNpDrm): File → Install PKG → select your .pkg. For NoNpDrm dumps (from your own digital library), also place
work.binin the correct path (shadPS4's wiki has the exact path mapping). - ISO: not directly supported — extract first with an appropriate tool (see shadPS4 wiki).
Add your game directory: Settings → Game Folders. Games appear in the shadPS4 library view. Always check shadps4.net/compatibility first — games rated "Playable" are the safest starting point.
Solution 2
Graphics settings (Settings → Graphics):
Renderer:
- Vulkan is the only available renderer. Confirm your GPU name appears in the Adapter drop-down.
- If the drop-down is empty: your GPU driver is too old or lacks required Vulkan extensions. Update your driver (NVIDIA: nvidia.com/drivers, AMD: amd.com/en/support) before proceeding.
Resolution Scale:
- 1×: native PS4 resolution (typically 1080p for most titles). Always start at 1× — confirm the game runs before pushing higher.
- 2×: effective 4K for a 1080p-native title. Requires a capable GPU (RTX 3070 / RX 6800 XT class or better for demanding titles).
Async shader compilation — enable ON: This compiles shaders in the background instead of blocking the game. Early sessions on a cold cache will still have brief hitches, but this is significantly better than synchronous compilation. The shader cache warms over multiple sessions.
VSync — keep ON unless specifically benchmarking. Disabling VSync without a frame cap causes the GPU to render thousands of frames, generating excess heat with no visual benefit.
Audio (Settings → Audio):
- Backend: SDL (recommended — most stable on Windows). If you hear audio stuttering, try XAUDIO2.
- Buffer: 512 samples default. Increase to 1024 if you hear crackling; decrease to 256 for lower latency if your system is fast enough.
Solution 3
Controller setup (shadPS4 uses SDL — most controllers work without additional software):
DualSense (PS5) / DualShock 4 (PS4) via USB:
- Connect the controller via USB before opening shadPS4.
- Settings → Input — controller appears automatically under SDL devices.
- Default button mapping matches the PS4 layout — no remapping needed for most games.
DualShock 4 via Bluetooth:
- Pair via Windows Bluetooth settings.
- If it doesn't appear in shadPS4, install DS4Windows (ds4windows.app) — it presents the DS4 as an XInput device SDL reliably detects. Use the Default profile; do not enable HidHide unless you know what you're doing.
Xbox / XInput controllers:
- Connect via USB or Xbox Wireless Adapter.
- Settings → Input — select your Xbox controller.
- shadPS4 maps XInput buttons to PS4 equivalents automatically; physical Xbox buttons (A/B/X/Y) map correctly even though in-game labels show PS icons (Cross/Circle/Square/Triangle).
Manual binding: click the slot you want to remap in Settings → Input and press the physical button. shadPS4 does not currently support per-game button profiles (as of 2026).
Save files: shadPS4 stores saves in the user/saves/ sub-folder within its installation directory. It is fully portable — all data stays inside the shadPS4 folder. Back up: copy the user/ folder before shadPS4 updates. PS4 console save transfer is currently limited (PS4 saves are encrypted with a console-specific key — requires a jailbroken console to decrypt).
Solution 4
Performance tips:
- Use an SSD for your game library and shadPS4 folder. Shader cache writes and game file access are I/O-intensive; an HDD causes visible stuttering, especially during shader compilation.
- Set Windows power plan to High Performance or Ultimate Performance. Right-click battery icon → Power Options → High Performance. Ensures CPU clocks are not throttled.
- Update GPU driver before first launch. Vulkan extension sets change between driver versions; shadPS4 devs test against recent drivers.
- Check the compatibility list first. Running a "Nothing" or "Intro" rated game and assuming the emulator is broken wastes time. Always verify at shadps4.net/compatibility.
- Shader cache warming: expect hitches for the first 20–30 minutes on any cold cache. Subsequent sessions on the same game area are much smoother.
- Close background apps during intensive scenes. Discord overlays, browser video, and background updaters compete for GPU resources. For GPU driver issues: GPU driver clean-install guide
Common issues:
- "Fatal error: required firmware module not found" — PS4 firmware not installed. Settings → System → Firmware → Install Firmware with your
PS4UPDATE.PUP. - Black screen on game launch, emulator doesn't crash — missing or incorrect game files, or missing
work.binfor NoNpDrm PKG. Verify all game files are complete andwork.binis in the correct path. - "Vulkan not supported" / adapter drop-down empty — GPU driver too old or Intel integrated GPU (not supported). Update driver at nvidia.com/drivers or amd.com/en/support.
- Game on compatibility list shows "Playable" but crashes — shadPS4 version issue or per-game regression. Check the GitHub issue tracker for your title; try one build older.
- Controller not detected — connected controller after shadPS4 launched. Reconnect before opening shadPS4. For DS4 Bluetooth, install DS4Windows.
- Severe shader compilation stutter — normal on cold cache. Warms over 20–30 min; ensure async shaders is enabled in Settings → Graphics.
- "DX12 / DirectX error" — you downloaded a fake emulator, not shadPS4. Real shadPS4 uses Vulkan only. Re-download from shadps4.net.
- Audio crackling / stuttering — Settings → Audio → increase buffer to 1024; close background apps.
- Very low FPS on powerful hardware — close background apps; set High Performance power plan; lower resolution scale to 1×. For slowdown diagnosis: Emulator slow on powerful PC
