Xenia Canary Xbox 360 Emulator — Setup Guide, Best Settings, and Compatible Games 2026
I want to play Xbox 360 games on my PC using the Xenia emulator. I downloaded Xenia but my games are not loading, I'm getting a DirectX 12 error, or the game crashes immediately. I'm also not sure which build to use (Xenia vs Xenia Canary), what disc image format works best, or which games are compatible in 2026.
Solutions
Solution 1
Xenia vs Xenia Canary — which to download:
- Xenia Canary is the version to use in 2026. It is actively maintained with frequent updates, better game compatibility, and improved performance over the older stable Xenia releases. Download from: canary.xenia.jp (official Xenia Canary site). Extract the zip to a folder such as
C:\Xenia\— do not place in Program Files as Xenia needs write access. - The older xenia_master releases on xenia.jp are months behind Canary and lack many compatibility fixes. If you downloaded the master build and a game fails, try Canary first before troubleshooting.
DirectX 12 requirement:
- Xenia Canary requires DirectX 12. This comes with Windows 10 and Windows 11 — most modern systems already have it. If you see "D3D12 not available" or "DirectX 12 required" on launch, your Windows installation may be missing the Visual C++ Runtime or have an outdated graphics driver.
- Fix: download and install the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Microsoft, then update your GPU driver to the latest version. Restart after both installs.
- Xenia does NOT support Windows 7 or Windows 8 — DirectX 12 requires Windows 10 or 11.
GPU compatibility note:
- Xenia Canary works on both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs that support DirectX 12 (GeForce 700 series+ / Radeon RX 400 series+). Integrated Intel graphics (HD 4000 and older) do not support DirectX 12 and cannot run Xenia.
- AMD GPUs often show better compatibility with Xenia's DirectX 12 implementation for certain titles. If a game crashes on NVIDIA but the same game is reported working by others, try the
--gpu=vulkanexperimental flag (Xenia Canary includes early Vulkan support for some builds).
Solution 2
Xenia supports several Xbox 360 game formats. Using the wrong format is a common cause of "game not loading" errors.
Supported formats:
- ISO — a disc image ripped directly from your Xbox 360 game disc. ISO files work best for disc-based games. Use Velocity or Xbox Backup Creator on your Xbox 360 (with a jailbreak or modded drive) to rip to ISO.
- GOD (Games on Demand) — the format used for Xbox Live Marketplace purchases, downloaded via the Xbox 360 console. These are folder structures with STFS container files. Xenia can open GOD packages but requires the game folder (not a compressed archive).
- XEX — the raw executable file. Xenia can load XEX files directly, but these are usually found inside an extracted ISO or GOD package. For most commercial games, load the ISO rather than hunting for the XEX inside it.
Load a game in Xenia:
- Launch Xenia Canary.
- File → Open → navigate to your ISO file (or select the
default.xex/default.xex.isoinside a GOD package folder). - Xenia does not have a game library browser by default — you load each game individually. Third-party launchers like Xenia Manager (community tool) add a library view and per-game settings.
Storage location for game files:
- Store your ISO files in a dedicated folder such as
D:\Xbox360 Games\. Avoid OneDrive-synced folders or network drives — Xenia reads game data in real time and latency-prone storage causes stutter.
Solution 3
Recommended Xenia Canary settings (xenia.config.toml):
- The config file is created in Xenia's folder on first run. Key settings:
gpu = "d3d12"— the default and recommended renderer. Change to"vulkan"only for testing if a specific game has D3D12 issues.vsync = true— prevents screen tearing. Leave enabled unless you're benchmarking.allow_avx2 = true— enables AVX2 CPU optimizations on modern processors. Speeds up emulation by ~10–15% on Ryzen or Intel 6th gen+ CPUs.readback_resolve = true— fixes graphical corruption in certain titles (Halo 3, GTA IV). Minor performance cost. Enable if you see color-banding or missing surfaces.
Games with strong compatibility on Xenia Canary in 2026:
- Halo 3 / Halo: Reach / Halo 4 — run excellently. These are some of the most tested Xenia titles and benefit from Canary's ongoing improvements. Campaigns fully completable.
- Burnout Paradise — very well-supported, consistent 30fps+. A great showcase title for Xenia.
- Portal 2 — playable with minor graphical glitches. Campaign can be finished.
- Skate 3 — highly tested on Xenia (meme status from YouTube). Runs well with some physics-based humor from timing variations.
- GTA IV / GTA: Episodes from Liberty City — playable, though some missions have performance drops and the engine is demanding. Canary improved GTA IV stability significantly over older builds.
- Gears of War 1/2/3 — generally playable. Occasional shadow glitches.
- Fable II / Fable III — playable with some graphical issues on older Canary builds; check recent compatibility reports.
- Dead Rising 1/2 — good compatibility, occasional slow-motion in large zombie crowds (CPU-bound).
Check compatibility before loading a specific game:
- Visit the Xenia compatibility list on GitHub (xenia-project/game-compatibility) — it lists known status (Playable / Runs / Loads / Nothing) for hundreds of titles based on community testing. Search your game's Title ID for accurate current status.
Solution 4
Game loads to black screen and hangs:
- The game's XEX binary loaded but the rendering engine hit an unsupported instruction. Check the Xenia log file (
xenia.login the Xenia folder) — look for "assert," "TODO," or "unimplemented" messages that indicate which feature failed. - Try switching GPU renderer: edit
xenia.config.toml→ changegpufrom"d3d12"to"null"temporarily to see if the game advances to audio-only (confirms it's a GPU issue, not CPU). If audio plays but screen is black, the rendering pipeline for that title is incomplete in Xenia.
Crash at startup with "Failed to map executable memory":
- This happens when Xenia's memory map conflicts with another process. Close antivirus real-time scanning during launch (add Xenia to the exclusion list permanently — emulators often trigger false positives and the AV's memory scanner interferes with Xenia's JIT compiler).
- Run Xenia as Administrator: right-click xenia_canary.exe → Run as Administrator. Required on some Windows 11 builds for correct memory allocation.
"Title ID not found" or game shows wrong title:
- Your ISO rip may be incomplete or the game file is from a different region than expected. Use Velocity to inspect the ISO and verify the Title ID matches what the Xenia compatibility list reports for your game + region.
Very slow performance (under 20fps in most areas):
- Xbox 360 emulation is CPU-intensive. A minimum of a 6-core CPU at 3.0 GHz+ is needed for most titles. Enable
allow_avx2 = truein the config and set Windows Power Plan to High Performance (not Balanced) — Xenia's JIT recompiler stalls when the CPU clocks down. - Some titles are not yet optimized in Xenia's D3D12 back-end and run below playable speed regardless of hardware. Check the compatibility list — if a game is listed as "Loads" rather than "Playable," low performance is expected and not something you can fix via settings.
